To be fair, it seems more to be talking about how QAnon, Proud Boys, and the rest are trying to take advantage of the situation and rope in some new members from WSB rather than comparing the two.

The covering of those groups and ideologies and associating them with WSB is in itself dangerous.

my point is that we can recognize that they're dishonestly running a smear campaign while still noting that there is an element of the far-right which likes to co-opt larger social grievances

Even if every single person on WSB had made a "woman belong in the kitchen joke" at some point in their lives and thought Anita Sarkeesian was a hack or Trump was great, I still wouldn't begrude them for this particular episode given that the hedge funds were deliberately trying to get one over on people who bought GME and had an uno reverse card pulled on them when the short squeeze happened. The money is going to people outside the establishment and probably isn't going to fund the Proud Boys, so... why is bringing up that some right-wingers might be supportive of it or involved in it so damning?

I actually peruse the forum, and whenever politics does get brought up, it is almost always a "Screw Trump"mentality. Most of the people there really, really don't like him or his brand of politics and populism. I'm sure there are trump supporters there, but they are in the minority at this point. Frankly, most people have seen this. I haven't talked to a single person, be they Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, or even working class/upper middle class who has taken this bait. Everybody hates what is getting pulled here, because it's showing how obviously unfair the system is
