Disney Parks To Alter Iconic Jungle Cruise Attraction

Postby Baloo Kingdom » Mon Jan 25, 2021 2:46 pm

As of a recent announcement, Disney has released a statement on their plans to refurbish their famous Jungle Cruise attraction to make it more culturally sensitive. The common complaint around is the depiction of native cultures in the attraction, such as the lost safari in the African Velt section and the "headhunter territory" subsection entirely.

Quotes From the Article Attached:
Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Portfolio Executive Chris Beatty says:
"So if you think of the famous rhino pole scene, with the team of explorers who have somehow camped that night and then been run up the pole by the rhino and a group of other animals… that will really kick off the storyline. Did you ever wonder who those explorers were or where they came from? What’s their backstory? As part of the enhanced storyline, each one of them will have their own story and cultural heritage."

The Walt Disney Company say they will add:
“more humor, wildlife and skipper heart – and also reflect and value the diversity of the world around us”.

NSG, your thoughts?

Although this change may come sadly to some, I believe that this alteration may be necessary to revitalize the attraction and to preserve its reputation to further generations.

So basically we're supposed to be having the vapours because the group of explorers being chased up the pole is becoming more diverse?

Never said that, if that was directed to me. Just thought this was an interesting topic for discussion.

I read through the article linked in the tweet, and the changes are barely about cultural sensitivity, and far more about story.

What was culturally insensitive about it in the first place?

Was it like their indian wars thing?

Yeah, it's like when they tweaked Pirates of the Caribbean to add Jack Sparrow and Barbossa to the ride. Except they clashed with the more stylised animatronics already in use.

I really don’t care. It’s an amusement attraction, not exactly some great work of American culture or whatever. Disney cares about the almighty dollar sign at the end of the day, nothing more and nothing less.
But your OP is a bit lacking. What is your opinion on it?

Much ado about nothing. I've never even heard of this ride, much less care what race are the anonymous explorers being treed by a rhino.

Essentially the primary argument is over the depiction of native cultures in the attraction. Examples being a lack of diversity and outdated cultural depictions.

Sorry for the sparse OP, I was in a time crunch. I'll add my opinion to the OP. In response to the cultural and artistic validity of the attraction: Although not being a highly regarded piece of American culture and accomplishment, this amusement attraction is both iconic and cherished by visitors and fans of the park. I don't blame you for not being interested in what I am interested in.

In response to indifference towards the topic: I don't blame you for not being interested in a theme park attraction. Being a fan of the park, I thought I'd make a topic about it to see others' opinions.

Well, the internet exists and I can hear the Tiki Room song whenever I want, so...

The only reason you go on that ride is for the guide's dad jokes. Nothing else matters.

Only thing I really remember about that ride is standing in line in the scorching June heat and mom complaining about the people who had FastPass.

The best part about fastpass is laughing at all the losers waiting in line...

...I don't have that shit, the only way I get to go to Disneyland though is if my friends who work for some branch of Disney take me or I perform there (looooooooooooong time ago) so I get to fastpass when I do, actin' all fancy.

So they're updating a old ride because of an upcoming movie and they decided that keeping the caricatures of tribal peoples probably wasn't the best choice.

Sounds like a pretty nonissue to be upset about.

The Internet Outrage Monster is like Galactus, its hunger can never be sated.

The worst is the Outrage at the Outrage, where I don't even hear about a thing until the Outrage at the Outrage comes along. Like when the Little Mermaid casting was announced and all I heard was people complaining about the complaining about the casting. We need to come up with a threshold, like 'there has to be this much noise before we care that people are saying a thing.'

I don't know what that metric would be.

Aren't they making a live-action Little Mermaid for some reason? If they want it to be accurate, the cast will have to be mostly of Danish origin, because the story whose title they borrowed was written by Hans Christian Anderson, who was Danish.

Or we could just cast people who are the most talented regardless of race....

I don't see why Disney would waste money giving ride characters you only see once or twice a visit backstories that have more detail than some movies.

What are the offending images? I think seeing them would better help judge how offending they are.

Man, one outrage at Disney per thread. We went over this ages ago.

Here's the cliff notes:
- There is no such thing as mermaids.
- As such, there is no such thing as 'accurate'.
- There are like dozens of adaptations of this story including the animated Disney movie. This one movie isn't going to ruin anything.
- The woman they cast is fine. Definitely not worth starting another argument about.

Yeah, no, she's totally fine! Cast the best person for the job! Not what I was implying because I don't know that cast.
