Puerto Rico Statehood

So behind all the Presidential drama of Trump v Biden another vote took place recently and 52.3% of Puerto RIcans voted in favour of asking to change the island’s status from unincorporated territory to U.S. State.
This is the sixth time the PR statehood referendum has occurred, the past two votes being in favour and the 2012 vote being uncertain.

While Puerto Ricans based in America tend to vote Democrat, those on the Island are a lot more conservative and the current representative in Congress is a Republican.

The main Political Parties on the Island are essentially the Pro-Statehood New Progressives, the Pro-Status quo Popular Democrats and a third Pro-Independence party. Notably the Progressives lost support in the recent elections if thats relevant.

But only Congress can admit States to the Union, so the question is should Puerto RIco be admitted as the 51st State of the USA?

I'm not sure what the exact procedure is but I believe that a petition to Congress for admission to the Union would be in order.

Do me a favor, drop your title into initial caps/lower case, please. Otherwise it looks like a shout (and you missed the "i" in "Rico").

Most Puerto Ricans on the island vote democrat. If they didn't, Republicans would probably be fighting tooth and nail to make them the 51st state.

Washington D.C and Puerto Rico should be US states.

I see no reason not too, they basically are the unofficial 51st state anyway from what I hear. They at least deserve to be a state.

True, citizens of D.C pay one of the highest tax rates in America yet has a representive that cannot even vote on important matters in congress? D.C must be a state!

Actually it’s a mix. The former governor of PR was a republican and the current house rep is also a republican. If it became a state the senate would probably split 50/50 while the republicans would gain between 1-3 representatives. With democrats having the same margin of 1-3

They should be a state. No taxation without representation, yo.

I personally think that both it and DC should be the latest states in the Union. "No taxation without representation" still stands.

All for it. Puerto Ricans are a chill, hard-working people and Puerto Rico deserves statehood.

Ah yes, the thread I have been waiting for. I wholeheartedly support making Puerto Rico a state, as it has more people in it then 29 states and territories. 29!. And yes, the referendum also gets my full support and I hope Biden will go through with finally making it a state. Though with the Popular Democratic Parties recent victory in its state legislative election, im surprised this referendum was allowed to go through.

Eh, referendums don't always work. Catalonia, DC.

Given the way that "democracy" works in the US, it's disgusting that Puerto Rico, Washington DC, American Samoa and the rest aren't states or aren't part of states.

No adult citizen of the US should be unable to exercise the right to vote in federal elections. Whatever legal institutions are necessary to ensure that right should be established forthwith.

Puerto Rico should become a state and except for the Constitutionally mandated areas, DC should be ceded back to Maryland.

So this is how the second Civil War starts. Not due to Trump but due to this question.

It wouldn't hurt to add a extra star to the flag.

Ideally, Puerto Rico should be set free and not kept in this neocolonial status quo. Alternatively, full statehood sure.

The "progressives" who should really be considered progressive in name only, lost support thanks to the actually progressive, based and left-wing Citizens' Victory Movement.
