Imagine not abolishing the monarchy.

One source says Californias Hispanic population was around 6500 at the beginning of the gold rush in 1848. The non-Hispanic were 800. One year after the start of the famous gold rush the non-hispanics were over 100.000 and it kept growing every year. Two years after the US officially annexed California from Mexico it became a State.

Many Right-wingers seem to be of the belief that the reverse is now happening to the border states and are convinced that Mexico is going to annex those states.
I'm sure it'll happen any second now...

This is the sixth time the PR statehood referendum has occurred, the past two votes being in favour and the 2012 vote being uncertain.
While Puerto Ricans based in America tend to vote Democrat, those on the Island are a lot more conservative and the current representative in Congress is a Republican.
The main Political Parties on the Island are essentially the Pro-Statehood New Progressives, the Pro-Status quo Popular Democrats and a third Pro-Independence party. Notably the Progressives lost support in the recent elections if thats relevant.
But only Congress can admit States to the Union, so the question is should Puerto RIco be admitted as the 51st State of the USA?

Si, si, and the sooner the better. I've known Boricuan Independentistas and sympathize with their cause, but we need at least two more Democratic Senators stat. The District needs to be a state as well.

That doesn't automatically follow when you consider the pro-statehood folks are predominantly Republicans. In reality, the Senate would be the same as now with each party getting one apiece and two apiece in the House.
In the House is plausible, due to districts. Not so sure about the Senate.
It could be kicked off that way by making the interim appointments one of each party?
Or non-partisan, since PR domestic politics isn't exactly aligned with the mainland parties.
