Yes. They're in the classroom, it's class time.

So kids who are there for an English lesson, or Chemistry or whatever, should just sit attentively while the teacher wastes their time with bullshit about their trip to America?

It's in the scenario you know. If you just look past the weak way IM tries to spin a travel story as a moral "lesson", it's the teacher wasting class time when the cheeky kid "speaks up".

Yes, indeed, sniper and sniper rifle are not interchangeable. It's like mixing up the chef with the chef's hat.

It's a horrible word, but if you want to know how to pronounce it, dictionaries have a little button which forces a very bored librarian to speak it aloud for you.

A more useful word would be one for "accidentally left out a word". Currently the best I can think of is the overly general "typo" which covers everything from two letter transpositions to pungent diatribes accidentally sent to your boss.

Yes. What the teacher is doing is irrelevant: if they're in the classroom, they should behave appropriately for being in a classroom.

What the teacher is doing absolutely IS relevant. Take that part of the scenario away, and make it that the kid interrupts a lesson to make an insulting joke at the teacher's expense, and the behavior is much worse.

Your bias in apprehension of the scenario, simply leaving out the part which makes "you" (the teacher) partly responsible, makes any response you have meaningless. If you can't accept the scenario, maybe you could make your own?

Depends on the age of the kid. If it’s a teenager, I’d just ignore it as that’s usual teenager stuff to say. If it’s an elementary aged kid, I’d use my role as a teacher to explain how jokes like that aren’t appropriate

I believe the teen was joking about the teacher possibly being the shooter.

A tasteless wiseass "joke", rather than malicious death-wishing.

The latter would possibly be worth doing something about -- especially if they were joking about the actual loss of life (rather than just making a poor-taste joke). Quietly removing them and sending them to talk them talk to student support might be worthwhile; lack of empathy is a concerning sign, and there's also the possibility that jokes about death are covering deeper feelings or distress that the teenage boy is masking with bravado from fear of being judged by his peers (student support are generally well-trained in dealing with such psychological matters).

based of the phrasing “Hey didn’t you just come back from America? He didn’t get you while you were there? DAMNNNNN...” it sounds as if the student is implying that it's unfortunate the teacher wasn't shot while in america, which i find more concerning, though perhaps 2 would be a better option
so basically 2020 election happens, there's a civil bloodbath, and the political system is overhauled as the nation tries to find unity and a new identity in a new age of political violence, alaska, hawaii, and puerto rico left the union, proportional representation enabled an increasingly individualized and oddly specific political climate, and lib-left lib-right solidarity is the favored form of compromise, now with a new flag!

I read "didn't you just come back from America" in its less sinister manner, teasingly (perhaps distastefully) implying the teacher was the shooter, and thus the sniper "hadn't got [the teacher]" as the teacher was, in fact the sniper. Crude and distasteful, but better ignored.

Perhaps that's my reading, as I don't generally interpret vague comments as death wishes.

You would have the know the student to know for sure: a mild troublemaker, involved with nothing serious (as stated in the OP) doesn't seem the type to wish death on someone -- such behaviour suggests a concerning lack of empathy and not the behaviour of the regular classroom wiseass. If that is the student's meaning, psychological support -- far more than a telling off or detention -- is urgently needed.
