Just as many on the left, living in bubbles, underestimated the size of Trump’s supporters, he, living in his bubble, overestimated that size. The backlash to yesterday has finally let him know that the jig is up, that there isn’t widespread enough support to keep him in office, and that he will be remembered in a negative light, and he’s scrambling to do anything to fix his image now.

Outside governments’ intelligence agencies have penetrated the US government many times throughout history and also have informal collegial networks among diplomats and senior officials so I wouldn’t necessarily dismiss them out of hand as being completely in the dark
