I'm all for capitalism and the rights of private entities, but I think we need to have a good faith discussion on the issue of social media censoring speech, not just dunking on your opposition when they get banned. While private, mediums like Facebook and Twitter control an extensive chunk of the media space and that these corporations have such control on what is deemed "acceptable," should give everyone pause.

There's a difficult balance to be struck between stopping conspiracy theories, radicalization, and other dangerous ideation from spreading unfettered and the rights of people to participate in discussion.

Corporations have an uncomfortable amount of control over speech in the modern digital age, but how do we go about reducing that influencing without directly handing it over to the government? We gotta decentralize the internet, man.

People keep saying this, but compared to when? Compared to what? Before the rise of social media it wasn't like anyone with five minutes to sign up could just print whatever the fuck they wanted in the newspapers or just send in two minute video to a television station and have it aired without question.

Everyone has exactly the same amount of tools they had prior to social media. Social media didn't replace anything. It created a venue out of whole cloth, one that despite all the handwringing and hemming and hawing, despite the companies being concerned over their own liability for hosting incitements to violence, still gives far more access and amplifies voices much louder than anything else that has come before it.

What's more, people have been using digital media to decry digital media as if they no longer have access to digital media when instead they don't have access to a specific branch of digital media.

While I would agree that consolidation like what Facebook has done is a monopoly and should be broken up, acting like digital media has somehow monopolized speech in general when in comparison to what existed before it digital media has done far, far more to give access than it has to restict it is ridiculous. Could it do better? Sure. Is the battle ground forcing companies to host incitements to violence while also considering their liability in doing so? I don't think that's where the fight is.
