Yup. New England is unique in that its rural areas except for northern Maine tend to be blue. I’d assume that it is because it still votes as if the religious culture war was still going on and that NE is fairly secular.

The urban-rural divide is very strong in many areas. You just need to drive for 5 miles in one direction from a confusing mixed suburb to a very blue or very red area.

Ah, okay. We sometimes have problems in the NW with people carving initials and the like into whales (usually when they're dead or dying and wash up on the beach, but I think sometimes it's happened at sea), which is gross and weird, so I was worried they actually took a knife to the poor thing's flesh. Etching on algae is still probably distressing for it but at least not so permanent or bizarrely cruel.
