That is an indictment of the Capitol's defenses, not an endorsement of the slick, machine-like efficiency of a carefully-orchestrated coup plot. They did a sloppy job and got unlucky. No putschist worth their salt leaves the success or failure of their scheme in the hands of fortune and a mob if they can help it (and if they'd put a minimal amount of thought into it or been willing to stick their necks out even a millimeter further, they could've helped it).

Description reads like Pence or whoever's in charge at the WH (or maybe the Pentagon?) issued it on his behalf, rather than it being a portent of an imminent second attempt.

And no, it's not at all legal, we've basically witnessed a bloodless counter-coup against Trump by... well, it appears the entirety of the rest of the US government and military, or almost the entirety. Historians are going to go nuts about this in a few decades (if there are historians, or people, I guess).

- invoking divine favor as an excuse for any and every misdeed
