You can still do both. I somehow manage to have a very poductive work and social life while wasting more time than I'd like to admit here.

Me too, most of the time! I still think that IC stuff is more rewarding than OOC discussions as they appear on NS, though I stop by now and then.

Its more rewarding because people put more effort in reading + responding.

You can write some effort or content post on NSG, short or long and it get wasted. No responses or just slided down by next page, as a dozen people make some oneliners.

Then you make one controversial trash take, ideally containing some buzzword regarding trigger issues like "guns" "gender" "race" or anything similar and you'd get a lot responses. Because people feel like inclined to make a moral or political stance against or for something. Virtue signalling. So it's a symphony (or more a cacophonia) of signalling really most of the time. And if your post doesnt contains any of that, it will likely be ignored, because lack of signal in such an environment equals invalid content that merits no response.

I never really participated in the wing threads, just lurked a bit, but after seeing where this forum’s gone following their shutdown, I feel nostalgic looking back at them

At times, I use NSG to test out ideas I'm going to use for my factbooks or to test out ideas in general. If you set it up right, preferebly inviting heated debates with two opposing sides, you can usually get new perspectives or directions to do further researches.

But yeah, like other players said, it's far easier to attract people by bringing virtue-signalling and emotionally charged issues like God or racism.

Most NSGers are very left winged, but not the bad kind of left wing. I have a 15 year old leftist relative who got the shits with me when I was criticing left-winged politicans, with the "you should know better" attitude. And I was thinking to myswlf "what do you know, sweetheart, I've been discussing politics since before you could talk, and you think that you know more than me". I wouldn't normally mind someone having a different opinion to me, but the "you should know better" attitude gave me the shits. I was discussing politics with a different, more level headed leftist, and when I oroved her wrong, she conceded defeat but was cluntching at straws to make herself feel good about being wrong. The people of NSG are, for the most part, more mature than that. As a centrist, I tend to have less of these problems with right-wingers whom I disagree with, but there are many of them stuck in an echochamber nonetheless. NSG is in my opinion, at times a left-winged echo chamber, but at least here, you occasionally get to hear opposing political views, and nobody chucks a mental when such views are presented and many of them are even willing to change their own views when proven wrong. I've also changed my own political views since joining NS, and I am very greatful for that

Really, more posts to the post counts. A lot people aren't aruging to actually hear the other side and change their beliefs, but to present their own opinions to try and convince others.

Pretty much the case in all political discussion. That isn't what irks me. What irks me is when people like to deplatform or censor other opinions or views from other people. It's fine to filter someone personally but the absence of deviant thought from any discourse is just a road down to ignorance and fear.
