So overnight, Australia just suddenly changed its national antjem from "we are young and free" to "we are one and free". In the spirit of unity and inclusioness of Aboriginals. There's not much to say about this, other than, okay, good I guess, if it's gonna make people happy, go for it. What do you think, NSG? I'm sorry that this is a short OP, but I really don't know what else to say

I disprove. The Australian national anthem should be Bart Zeal's Upside Down.

Disappointed to see the title and find out it wasn’t changed to Waltzing Matilda

Why did they not change it to a ACDC song that people can sing the words to?

Based. The Aboriginals still need vastly more support to keep their languages and religions alive though.

Good question. Having an AC/DC song for a national anthem would be totally epic.

When you win something at the Olympics or wherever, everyone will be jealous of how awesome your music is.

I mean great that they slightly changed it but it’s not enough, they can do way more than just say “we are one”.

The national anthem represents the culture and history of the country. Any country that is not in peace with its past will make a mistake. I think changing the flag and national anthems means the collapse of a country. I think it's a sad event.

More virtue signaling which ultimately does nothing to actually improve the situation for the indigenous population. I'm not exactly surprised, but disappointed nonetheless.

If a country is held together solely by a fan club song and a sheet of cloth then that country has much more serious problems.

I second this statement. It's a much better song.

I support this 100% but it a lot more needs to be done to reimburse Australian Aboriginals after what they've gone through. OH and that 0 dollar welfare thing in Northern Territory cannot help, so ironic that they're doing this. So welcomed but more needs to be done.

Hmm, I don't remember there ever being a line saying 'Young and Free' in Australia's national anthem.

But I do remember the bit that goes "He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich, I live in the land down under."

I endorse Waltzing Matilda as the new National Anthem.

Next, remove all imperial iconography from government.

I think like you about this, but I also believe that flags and anthems are an unchangeable part of culture. Flags and national anthems are works of art in my opinion and should not be changed. Imagine that the original Mona Lisa painting has been changed.

It’s one small step, I’m hopeful more will follow.

The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent
To pay our share

The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

Our national anthem does suck though.A national anthem is either supposed to inspire you to stand up and be proud of your country, or inspire you to fight for your country. Advanced Australia does neither. Advanced Australia Fair inspires me to fall asleep. If I were in charge, I'd make the anthem be I am you are we are Australian which signifies everything our country stands for and makes you proud to be Australia

Flags and anthems are representations of a country, and it's fair for a country to decide that the symbolism of either no longer represents them. For example, if the UK was to lose Scotland, or if the Queen was to die, it would be fair for them to adjust their flag or anthem to represent the new reality.

It's not as if the old flag and anthem are purged from existence when any changes are made. The old Australian anthem with the old lyrics still exists, it's just not used by Australia.
