Argentine Senate to vote on legalizing abortion

Postby Cultural Posadism » Tue Dec 29, 2020 3:38 pm

With COVID-19 still circulating but the first round of vaccinations taking place, plus pensions reform taking place simultaneously in the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate of Argentina is going to be holding a vote on legalizing abortion later tonight, following several hours of debate on the floor, as well as years of campaigning from both sides.

Argentina abortion: Senate to vote on legalisation
Senators in Argentina are debating a bill which would legalise abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy.

If it passes, the bill would be groundbreaking for Latin America, a region which has some of the world's most restrictive abortion laws.

The bill has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies but the result in the Senate is predicted to be tight.

In 2018 senators narrowly voted against legalising abortion but this time the bill has the backing of the government.

The Catholic Church, which remains highly influential in Latin America, opposes the move.

It has called on senators to reject the bill. Pope Francis, who is Argentine, tweeted just hours before the debate that "every outcast is a child of God".

Both supporters of the legalisation and anti-abortion activists have gathered outside Congress to try and sway undecided senators.

Currently, abortions are only permitted in Argentina in cases of rape or when the mother's health is at risk.

Abortions are completely banned in El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic and only allowed in certain restricted circumstances in most other Latin American nations.

In the wider region, only Uruguay, Cuba, Guyana and parts of Mexico currently allow women to request an abortion, with varying limits on the number of weeks of pregnancy in which an abortion is legal.

In 2018, when Argentina's Congress last voted on the matter, the measure scraped through the lower house by four votes. But it was rejected in the Senate by 38 to 31.

This time, the lower house approved it by a wider margin - 131-117. Of the 72-member Senate, five members are reportedly still undecided.

The debate is expected to be long and heated.

OP's take: I expect it to pass by a narrow margin, and I hope it does, both as a matter of principle (I'm pro-choice) and just to end this debate for once and for all (I'm so exhausted of listening to some really idiotic politicians and pundits deliver increasingly deranged hot takes on why legalizing abortion is bad).

What say you, NSG? Do you hope it passes? Do you have any cool conspiracy theories on why some people want it passed?

Some highlights from this year's bad abortion takes extravaganza: we got a lot of TERF shit as politicians began to acknowledge that some trans people can also get pregnant and abort, plus one pro-life deputy (that is, congresswoman) delivering a spectacular self-own by arguing that if we don't want our laws to abide by her religious beliefs we should get God out of the Constitution, apparently unaware that secularism is hot shit nowadays.

Come on, Argentina... go back to that late 19th century-early 20th century liberal prosperity already!

I think abortion is misguided, I say you let the babies be born so they can duke it out in an arena style matchup. If you have a losing kid, you then have the option to not keep it. It could be taxed and subsidized to raise money for public programs, such as parks, schools and more arenas.

All seriousness, good on Argentina for taking the steps to legalize abortion. I do imagine it'll pass narrowly.

Good things happen, after all
Abolitionism in the North has leagued itself with Radical Democracy, and so the Slave Power was forced to ally itself with the Money Power; that is the great fact of the age.

Even if it's on a limited basis, it's still a step in the right direction.

This reminds me though, is it too late for me to put an update in the megathread?

I don't know... but speaking of updates: two previously undecided/abstaining senators have confirmed that they will vote in favor of the bill legalizing abortion. With that, the bill has 37 votes in favor and 32 against,

Eh, Argentina didn't really get to have that type of social growth due to, you know, the whole US installing a military dictatorship for freedom thing going on during the Cold War.

Again there is no magical coup button at Langley. A coup can only happen, regardless of outside support if the society already has severe problems. The people doing the coup were Argentinians.

Besides the fact that Argentinian problems did not begin with the 1976 coup, the coup was not the US “installing” new leaders. The coup plotters did what they did for their own reasons, and could do it because the ruling President lost support of the military and security establishment.

US support was not the sole nor primary cause of the coup, which probably would have succeeded without US support.

And even had that coup failed, it would no have fixed the underlying Argentine problems that caused it.

For better or worse, over here debates on social issues usually just end the moment the law is passed. But I do worry it might change from now on because there's a lot of right-wing christian orgs trying to build a movement here.

I was expecting them to vote against, so this is a great surprise.
