i'd rather have someone catcall me than steal from me and no girl i know would rather be punched a thousand times than have a stranger make a sexual remark about her. draconian laws against sexual harassment and false accusations of adultery would help no one.

Historically, a large part of it was the defense of those less powerful than oneself. That included women, the elderly, children, and non-combatants in general.
