I support it as optional for rape, certain types of murder (murder motivated by sadism or sexual pleasure, murder of children under fourteen and murder of women or elderly folks in the furtherance of theft), child molestation, military cowardice based offences or treason.

I understand the traditional motivations for making murder, treason etc punishable by death, but why specify the murder of women and the elderly?

No. Natural law. Also the belief that people have a duty to protect those groups. And the belief that it requires a negative character to do those acts.

Putting aside he face that most conceptions of "natural law" are bogus, I would argue it requires a negative character to murder anyone, not just women, children, or the elderly.

Frankly, if one favours the death penalty, it shouldn't really come with caveats based on identity.

Last time I checked we're in a different century where women can do whatever they want and sleep with however many people they want. Men can alao do whatever they want and should not be shackled by outdated gender roles. Oh and not be put to death for stealing bread or sleeping with someone you are not married to.

I don't even care much about how immoral capital punishment is, or at any rate, I do not find it a very strong argument, since morality, especially in this case, is very subjective.

But it is simply stupid. Statistics suggest that it only serves to increase the number of violent crimes, it is insanely expensive, it encourages a vindictive attitude among the people, and perpetrators of capital crimes get an easy way out. Just put those criminals away for life, and in the grand scale of things, everybody (but them) will be happier.

I mean, I'd agree that the murder of the elderly does deserve a harsher punishment than most murders, although I oppose the death penalty altogether.
