And have remained split on religious lines. If a white Christian moves into the area and goes along to their local church, it probably won't be the race of the congregation that makes them not want to come back. Or even not feeling welcome. It will be because they're used to Mainline Protestant and Southern Baptist is quite different.

I'm not sure if that's maintaining segregation, or if it's outweighed by the white Christians who keep coming back and build links between the white and black communities through church. I think the church-goers who really want segregation are probably gathering some place else not in church, so at worst the effect of Christianity to continue segregation would be neutral.

With colleges we say "traditionally black college" and most people can figure out that they still have mostly black students.

I'm a lot more tolerant of self-segregation in church, than in college. It's segregation by choice, but churches are a refuge from the world. Colleges should be more a reflection of the world outside. In any case, as long as they're not turning people away for their race, I guess it has to be tolerated.
