They've held off more than that. Capitol and metro police are no stranger to mass riots.

The metro police were not deployed until later in the day, possibly (and this is just my speculation) to avoid angering the President, and the President seems to have deliberately delayed the deployment of the National Guard as a way to intimidate Congress.

I don't see how one is a bystander when they're in the place where the mob is trying to seize control of the capitol. It's not right that she died, but the capitol police did what they had to do in this instance to protect the seat of the federal government.

Well protestors did break into the legislature in HK, just no one was in there at the time. no one to particularly protect and certainly not at a time of certifying presidential elections.. not that we particularly have those..

Ashli Babbit's death shouldn't come as a surprise. When you're trying to breakthrough a locked door being guarded by the Secret Service as they are trying to protect members of Congress and the Vice President during a high tense situation such as storming the Capitol, you shouldn't expect a lot of leeway in terms of when they decide to start letting bullets fly.

However, we should still view her death as a tragedy, especially since it seems she got sucked down the QAnon rabbit hole. While QAnon itself is a pretty dumb idea, and Trump being the savior even more dumb considering that he's been accused of raping a child himself, it's hard for me to not understand why people would latch onto something like it. Her mind got warped which led her to get dragged into something else which in turn led to her death. It's an unfortunate tragedy all around and if you're the theistic type (as I am), should pray that she's found peace and forgiveness.
