What does Christmas mean to you?

Postby Spiritual Republic of Caryton » Tue Dec 01, 2020 5:57 pm

It's no surprise, the holidays are rolling around. In 2020, you can't predict anything. This topic may have been discussed before, lost in the sands of the NS forums, but I feel like now is a better time than ever to ask the common yet meaningful question: What does Christmas mean to you?

This is a simple thread, but the possibilities are endless. Do you still tell the traditions of Santa Claus? Do you solemnly remember the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives and his deeds- commemorating his birth? Do you strive to serve others? Cook dinner? What are your traditions? Should there be one way to celebrate the holiday or do you believe that traditions can bend? What is the holiday season? Maybe you don't celebrate, or subscribe to a different major holiday. That's also well and good.

Share insight with others, despise fruitcake, try to keep major political arguments out of this as a matter of posterity. Comment on traditions, keep discussion alive.

Do you want to have a chance to make others holidays a bit brighter? Help Light The World. Light The World is an annual movement lead by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to inspire service, Christlike love, and strengthening the holiday spirit. Get daily text reminders with prompts to help quell these chaotic times and be there for your community. Obligatory disclaimer, this is not a secular service. If you'd rather stay away from Christian doctrines, I'd still advise you visit the website below for a list of charities to consider sharing to. To be a part of this month long initiative, see lighttheworld.org

What does Christmas mean to me? I try to help my friends as much as I can in these times. My christmas season is relatively reserved and quiet, and our house regretfully isn't abuzz with life. There are still presents, and there is still dinner. For me, it's just a relaxing getaway. I've tried to remember the origins of the day and put more thought into Jesus' life and teachings but overall it's pretty eventless. I've heard people describe everything from massive christmas trees to dancing with their extended relatives, so I am intrigued to know what everyone's holiday season is like.

Friends, family, good food, presents, and worship.

Also looking forward to the day when Mariah Carey finally shuts the fuck up and I can listen to the radio on a car ride.

Christmas means eating Chinese food, playing poker, working long into the night, and doing anything to avoid dignifying the holiday.

It means the whole family getting together and celebrating. We hold a big feast with the extended family eating, talking, and laughing for the rest of the day, I love it. I'm gonna miss it this time but there's always next year. :)

Same here. It's nice to share the time with family, and set all troubles aside for a while.

Baby Birkenau asks why can't you just do that all year round?

It means to me as a time with lots of things that makes me happy. Beautiful lights! Songs! Giving and getting! A mysterious magical being! Food! Family! Being filled to the brim with joy! All those good things rolled into one time.

2020 Christmas is a cold and terrible reminder that the calculus exam is 10 days away, meaning that I'll be stuck working countless problems at home while the rest of my family enjoy a happy holiday (while rigorously adhering to health protocols) far far away. Yaay!

The gateway to the north. That time period where we go from being kind of cold in the Midwest to absolutely freezing to the point the world looks like it went and died.

Christmas is the one sentimental day each year where you can be with your family and celebrate the birth of some guy who probably wasn't even born on that day.
Aside from that, it's all about being together and giving thanks and whatnot. It really is a magical time of year, and it means a lot to me, especially in a year such as this one.

Also, I would include snow, but the closest equivalent to that where I live is the heavy rain and occasional sludge.

Baby Birkenau has found out that Jesus (who isn't real btw) wasn't born on December 25, nor was he born in the year 0.

A commercialized holiday where big business begins selling merchandise in July and by December it's like Black Friday every day.

Keep on consuming. Keep buying things you don't need while being one of the 83% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck and worrying that you'll be living in a box someday under the 110.

OMG your population is 6 million.

Christmas is a time for enduring nonstop shmaltzy music on the radio everyday. Christmas is a time for recognizing all the microaggressions against your community. Every Christmas, I wonder why the population of the US has been brainwashed to think red, white, and green look good together. Christmas is a time for thinking that the one Hanukkah shelf at your local Target is good representation, especially when there is nothing for Kwanzaa. There is a reason why many people are depressed over the holiday season.

Giving thanks for the birth of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

Eating loads, drinking even more and having a jolly good time with friends and family. And all the Christmasy things too.
