Boko Haram has just claimed responsibility for a massacre of 78 farmers near Maidguri, Nigeria. As far as I can tell, they killed only Muslims. Again. Seriously, how does “Let’s kill Muslims to show how Muslim we are” make sense to “jihadis”?!

They’ve also called for 10,000 people in Maidguri to join them.

This has caused outrage across Nigeria.

We also have the renewed outrage over the imprisonment of Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky. Al-Zakzaky is a Shiā Muslim cleric, who is beloved by Iran and hated by Nigeria’s government, which sees his organization as illegal. Shiās in Nigeria, concentrated mainly in Sokoto, want his release, as do hardliners in Iran and its diaspora. Last month, his supporters were fired upon in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

And SARS: Special Anti-Robbery Squad. After an incident where it’s members killed a man and drove off in his car, Muslim, Christian and Hindu Nigerians United to protest it, and were successful in getting Muhammadu Buhari to disband it. However, SARS members were simply allowed to join other police organizations, meaning the problem has not yet been solved.

Hausas are a very large ethnic group in Nigeria. Kanuris on the other hand almost entirely live in Borno State which is pretty much where Boko Haram exists. Islam is widespread throughout northern Nigeria. Yet Boko Haram is clearly a Borno State phenomenon as opposed to a northern Nigerian, let alone Pan-Islamic one. So the real nature of BH is pretty obvious.

I suspect ethnic hatred. There is a reason there are things such as white churches and black churches even if they may not differ much on theology.

If Boko Haram does not represent an unusual Muslim sect in northern Nigeria. Yet it murders other Muslims in the name of Islam we have to consider whether there is an ethnic motive. We don’t interpret burning black churches as atheist violence or inter-Christian religious violence, do we? Are these murdered farmers of Hausas or some other non-Kanuri ethnic group in the predominantly Kanuri Borno State?

Fun fact: “Boko” is from “book”, Hausa people under the British often couldn’t say it right and just said “boko”, which is now used to refer to the Latin Alphabet and Western Education.
