Depends on what municipality your talking about.

That's fair. Based on my experience, at least, that's why I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah it can see what you mean. Everybody is worried about “who’s president “ and while that’s important, local affects you immediately and affects you the most. So people tend to forget that.

They don't forget, they just don't really care. It's depressing. Don't do that to yourself.

Yes it does and hence why municipal and county elections are so important. People tend to overlook them. There is a good chance your town or county has elections next year.

Witiland wrote:So ever since I learned the words politics it has always interested me. Now I started my interest in 2016, although I’ll admit I believed everything that everyone said ( I supported trump because my dad did). I would say I really got super interested a couple months ago. When the pandemic personally affected me (school was made all virtual and my parents got sick with it) and Trump failed to control the spread, I sudd rly found myself watching CNN and the Covid-19 briefings everyday. I think I’m so interested by politics mainly because I enjoy history and and I wanted to create my own history. Now possibly in the mid 2040s/ early 2050’s I want to run for president. Of course I will have at least 20 years of experience in the senate, and 4 years in college. So what do you think? Any advice or comments?

Although when I run for senate or a local role I plan to run as a democrat, my parents always joke away saying I’m gonna be a hard core conservative. Actually I would not be too surprised since some issues like global warming and such are becoming more bipartisan rather than being a party thing. Right now I’m a moderate Democrat who would be republican if they supported climate change and UBI

Before thinking about statewide office focus on learning local issues for county or municipal office. State legislature is also a good staring point.

Best advice besides "Start local and move your way up" is to open dialogue with the younger generation. I'm between Millennial and Zoomer (b 1997) so obviously the issues that concerns Gen Alpha is unlikely to be visible to me, and if I do notice issues that concerns them, I probably won't understand how much of a concern it is.

Of course, if your only concern is gaining and maintaining power, then my advice won't mean much. If you want to make positive change in your country and make it a place of pride and prosperity, always, always keep an eye out for issues that concerns the younger generation. Because eventually their concerns will become a national issue
What if America, but hyper progressive? Universal healthcare, Walkable cities, outdoor culture, and $1 Trillion military budget because we're the best. CIA love Teddy Roosevelt and the environment enough to torture Oil executives. Our conservatives shoot Klansmen, our liberals punch Nazis

Funny how I come to the thread to find my obvious idea obviously taken.

So that aside, err...I'll agree with Alternamerica and talk more to those who are younger, or at least get in touch with their concerns. Also invest well in the humanities (although if you're wanting to run for POTUS then I shouldn't need to tell you that) and...don't screw things up - we wouldn't want that :)

The thing with state legislatures is most of them are part time positions so you have to own your own business or work for an employer who values the perceived influence ( generally banks and law firms).

Personally I'm not particularly for it or against it, all I care about is policy. If I had to choose between an asshole socialist and a well-mannered fascist I wouldn't have to think about it at all.

The thing is though, the people who care about policy are usually firmly entrenched on one side or another. The problem is the undecideds who are easily manipulated.

Anyway, I don't think Trump lost because he's a jerk, he lost because he spectacularly fucked up responding to a pandemic and the economic damage it caused.

He fucked up the pandemic response because he's a jerk. He couldn't let the experts talk without shitting on them when Fauci or whoever got too popular.

True. After college you should start by working for the mayor of a big city (as an aide), maybe even become a senator’s aide. After that a run for Congress would not be too difficult. By your 40’s you can start to consider the presidency, but don’t run after the age of 70. If you do run for President, please tell me though, you seem like a good candidate. Final warning: DON’T LET CORPORATIONS, CORRUPT POLITICIANS, LOBBYISTS, SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS, ETC CORRUPT YOU!

True but it’s a good starting point.

I'd be an inspiring disaster. Probably resign right after the mid-terms, and for my parting speech sing the worst cover of House Of The Rising Sun that anyone has ever heard. Then shoot myself.

Being my VP would be a good gig though. You want it?

I accept.

Exactly... abolish the electoral college and then we have a true democracy!

For the Presidency perhaps. But the President doesn't do everything, and you don't want him to try.

A "true democracy" in my opinion provides a representative for almost every vote cast (instead of half). That means proportional representation, though it doesn't rule out having local members too (MMP). All votes should count equally, so that's it for the Senate, and the Electoral College. A true democracy gives power to the people's representatives WITHOUT an "upper" house to limit it, or a President to veto it.

Abolish the Electoral College, of course. Also abolish the Presidency. And the Senate.

If even local politics is depressing, Witiland should find that out sooner rather than later. There are going to be years of that.

Disregard Geneviev's non-advice. If you live near the state Capitol, go in and watch some of that too. Don't predicate your future career on being President one day after some "depressing" or "boring" years in lesser politics, only to find out you have too thin a skin or aren't prepared to read fat documents twelve hours a day. It's like taking on massive debt studying to be a surgeon and finding you can't stand the sight of blood.

Do everything you can to find out what the job involves. Definitely join a party! Put yourself forward as a party volunteer, intern with the most senior politician who will have you. Brace yourself for them not being as honest as you expected ...

Why? They could make a lot more money and with less arguments, being a part of corporations and big business. Maybe CEO of a tobacco company ... or hell, why not coal? The talent are likely avoiding it because they assume the industry is dying. They haven't foreseen the craze of the 2030's: coal cigars!
