Northumbrian/Northern nationalism: NOW A REALITY?

Munk has stated in the past that he doesn't consider Yorkshire "real" so I doubt he cares.

And, just for some other recently discovered, erm, facts to add to "Yorkshire is fake news": water is dry, the sky is pink, and hippopotami weigh a deceptively light one-pound-three-ounces.

Yorkshire has more grounds to be a devolved part of the UK than uniting with the rest of "Northumbria". We make up the bulk of the North of England, and our economy is stronger than Wales.
Why should Yorkshire be at the whim of a handful of people from the North East?

Clearly, the long-dead Northumbria that hasn't existed for a millennia is more real than the still-around Yorkshire that has existed for at least the past couple of centuries.

As Arch pointed out, even at the time of Northumbria, Yorkshire, or Deira, was pretty much it's own thing, especially after the Danes took it over.
So Northumbria was never really united back then.

It would be better to say that while the concept of a united Kingdom of Northumbria survived the death of Oswiu (r.654-670), the first true king of a united Northumbria (though Deira and Bernicia had previously been united under Aethelfrith of Bernicia and Edwin of Deira from c.600-632), and the monarch who oversaw the peak of Northumbrian power, the kingdom was undermined by constant infighting between the two royal dynasties from the two sub-regions that had previously been kingdoms in their own right. If you look at the list of Northumbrian kings, after Oswiu's death the throne is highly unstable, passing back and forth between the descendants of Oswiu (who was from the Deira ruling dynasty), descendants of Ida of Bernicia (the shadowy founder of the latter subkingdom in the 6th century), the usurping line of Aethewald Moll, and a couple of other usurpers of unknown connection to the other dynasties. In the 197 or so years between the death of Oswiu and the conquest of the kingdom by the Great Heathen Army, Northumbria had 27 reigns (I have to use 'reigns' instead of monarchs due to the number of kings who were deposed and then restored), for an average reign of slightly over 7 years. But take out Eanred, who ruled for at least 31 years (and possibly 40; Northumbrian history in this period is messy), and you have 26 reigns in 166 years, for an average reign of 6.3 years. Even taking shorter lifespans into account, that's a lot of reigns - and goes some way towards explaining why Northumbria was eclipsed by Mercia after Oswiu.

Just goes to show, without the logistical and administrative capabilities of a central power, you cannot hope to maintain a vast kingdom of differing opinions.
