USA's Chances in the 2010 World Cup

Postby Steel Butterfly » Sun Jun 28, 2009 2:51 pm

ESPN's most recent poll, as a result of the Confederations Cup loss, shows this:

Somewhat strangely, it seems that with a few exceptions here and there, ones beliefs in the US team depends on the region that person lives in. Explanations? Speculation? Guesses? America is TEH FAIL!!!11?

the North East has more European immigrants so perhaps they have a better clue on soccer.

As much as it annoys me to agree with the prediction of Quaterfinals, I have to agree. It would be awesome if they reached Semi-finals or better, though.

wat i am hoping for, ideally, for the USA is a nice semi-finals run. maybe throw in an exciting win or two along the way and it would really rally popular support for the USA soccer team. i think it could happen realistically but it will depend greatly on the draws. more likely though, i think quarterfinals will be an acceptable result. anything less would be pathetic.

Oh, so you guys get to the final in a wee tournament and, suddenly, you're interested in football, eh?

I don't think they'll get any further than the knockout stage.

On the contrary, if the US team gets into the quarter-finals, it'd be no mean feat.

I figure quarterfinals again, and probably eliminated just as easily as last time, leaving me free to root for France, the Netherlands, and Germany.

It really depends on who they get, but I don't think they will get passed the first knockout round. Maybe they will get to the quarterfinals if they get a good matchup.

With a bit of luck, maybe the knockout round. With a lot more maybe the quarter finals, though I really doubt its going to happen for them.

Reaching the quarters would be an amazing result for the US.

They have no chance of getting to the semis.

I say final 16 and then eliminated.
I suggest that from my little knowledge of American Soccer, aside from California, Soccer is largely more popular on the Eastern Sea Board.
They know more of Soccer than the Mid-Westerners who believe more in America and think with their hearts not their heads.

I'll be surprised if they make the quarter finals, to be perfectly honest.
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

I actually assumed that was 1994 World Cup and was quite surprised by the outlandish and undeserved statement, USA played quite well in 1994.
Indeed 2004 there was no World Cup. :/

Oh, I'm sure they'll do fabulously... I can see it now, the final between the USA and Thailand... it'll be thrilling!

Nope, they didn't even make it to the final round. It's Australia, Japan, the Koreas, and possibly Bahrain or Saudi Arabia.
