I misread the title as "Morocco goes back to war with Spain" and I became even more worried...

I'm curious as to how that reading ever happened...

Well to be fair the sidebar only shows "Morocco goes back to war in the Weste...." which is vague and I'm not really conditioned to read that as Western Sahara so my first thought is that it's another war with Spain with the islands or with Ceuta.

There isnt really much to win. Except a lot of, well, sand.

Morocco already controls pretty much anything with value. But it seems it is more about Morocco wants to secure the roads running to Mauritania. So it is fighting for roads in the otherwise empathy expanse of sand it seems.

I doubt the Moroccans really care much about the land beyond the roads. Which is definitely largely worthless.

True, it seems with aerostats and adequate air support the majority of the area could be effectively controlled from the air.
Because there is not much terrain to hid behind. Or populated areas to attack from.
