John McCain vs Miranda Rights

So last night at work I was listening to the radio, and the news at the top of the hour had a audio clip of John McCain going off on how the Times Square attempted bomber should not have been read his Miranda Rights.

I just wrote this off as an old politician trying to play the game which he is well past his prime in. But as the night wore on a conservative talk show started playing clips from many conservatives agreeing with McCain!

Now, I am a Libertarian, but I have always been sympathetic towards conservatives and how they are generally mistreated in the media. But what? How can it possibly be that they agree with McCain? Have they all gone insane?

Heres how I see it:
*The guy was arrested by a civilian law enforcement agency.
*The guy was arrested on US soil.
*The guy is a US citizen.
*The guy is going to be tried in a US court.

My conclusion:
*He needs to have his Miranda RIGHTS read to him... Its sorta his right to have that done.

I understand people thinking that terrorists in Iraq detained by US military shouldn't have their right read to them, but don't take rights away from US citizens. If you do, its sort of a slippery slope.

Never rejoice at the oppression of others, for you may be next.

If he didn't the judge would have been forced to throw the case out. Good that they did (not that I am jumping to any conclusions about the guys guilt. I don't know much about the case)

Looks like McCain doesn't know his American law. But whatever. If the dude wasn't read his rights, all that means is that any information he would have said would be inadmissible in court, and they had enough evidence to convict him without a confession.

Well, it's quite possible that McCain's full quote was something like "Don't give this guy his Miranda rights until we find out what it's all about...we may as well waive that 'right to a fair trial' thing as well, it's not like it's in the Constitution and hey, he looks pretty guilty... Jeez, what do you guys think? Of course he should be read his rights! I swear, don't you people know anything about our legal system?!", but all but the first sentence was snipped so that the media would have a more sensational story. Like when book reviewers write a sentence like "[author's name] displays an incredible lack of talent in his latest and most sublimely boring œuvre..." and the publisher takes out the words "incredible ... [author's] most sublime ... œuvre" to put on the back jacket.

That strikes me as pretty unlikely though considering the level of current neoconservative discourse in the USA.
