Everyone looked at me, the resident news-bearer. I surmised that the news networks had concluded that Pennsylvania had flipped to Biden, securing the former vice president’s place as the 46th president of the United States.
This was an Orthodox shtiebel in New York. Almost every Orthodox Jew, certainly in New York, voted for Donald Trump. Although I didn’t ask – I would never ask – I am pretty sure that no one in that room was an exception to that rule. In fact, several of the worshipers are politically to the Right of Attila the Hun.
And then the cheering stopped. As if in concert, the shtiebel’s neighbors, those who could look down on the backyard, began opening their windows. And the shouting began.
Antisemitic slurs were hurled at us, one after the other after the other. Awful comments. Comments I will not repeat. Most of us remained silent. Two men who felt the need to respond shouted back, “Thanks for being so tolerant.” One of our verbal attackers, I guess he had run out of antisemitic slurs, shouted, “And you’re not even vegetarians.” True, but relevant?
On the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a bastion of liberalism, we were being peppered with antisemitic slurs. We could see their faces. We know who they are. We shop in the same supermarkets, go to the same drug stores and dry cleaners. They had no shame. All they had was vitriol and anger.
This was not an Antifa group in Portland. It was not a group of college kids or youngsters. These were serious adults shouting from the comfort of their homes. They were shouting at me, and by extension, at all Jews.
They were not just celebrating the Biden victory, they were celebrating that when it came to politics, we, kippah-wearing Jews were now on the wrong end of the spectrum.
COVID has changed our lives. So, too, have politics. COVID is not in our control. Politics are. At least, in a democratic society they should be.

Yes, that's terrible. People shouldn't shout racist slurs at others just because they're suspected of being Trump supporters. Very inappropriate. They should have restrained themselves to variations on "losers!" and "the White House is Our House, and the People's House too!"

This is an interesting tidbit though. The author assumes everyone else voted for Trump, because it would be considered bad manners to admit to any politics left of Attila the Hun.

The religious leaders of that group are extremely right wing, so anyone who's not had better shut it. Religion is an alternative power structure (in some places remains THE power structure) and in still-virulent pockets of the Western world, religious groups choose such strict religious control that any political dissent is excluded. Well you get that I guess, with freedom of speech and religion.

Imagine being the poor bastards in the Secret Service tasked with protecting Trump right now.

Its quite an interesting situation if Trump refuses to leave the White House and tries to barracade himself. Because he was POTUS at one point, the Secret Service has to protect him for life but at the same time, they also might need to use force to remove him, but without harming him. What to do?

I honestly don't know what would be resorted to. Whilst he's asleep, maybe he'd get anesthetic and be carried out the back and once he's awake again, maybe he'd be back at Mar-A-Lago and he just wouldn't be able to go near the White House anymore if he's uninvited if he's already been relocated.

They would tell him to leave and he would pout and whine and leave. Trump is like a giant toddler in many ways, but he's not going to lie on the floor and kick and scream until he gets his way.

She's entirely right. The GOP supported Trump to the hilt. If they're allowed to just wash their hands of him now that he's lost then this will all happen again. Those Congressional Republicans who backed Trump need to have their hands pried from the levers of power, they have proven themselves to be utterly corrupt.

It's not illegal to make a record of public statements by politicians that those politicians may later find embarrassing. The US doesn't have a right to be forgotten, and even if it did there's no way it would apply to politicians and public figures.

In my country, ALL of these people, pro-Trump, pro-Biden, anti-lockdown, pro-BLM, would be in jail for participating in an illegal mass gathering in contravention of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act unless they are VIPs with close ties to top-ranking government officials or hardcore loyalists of a certain former, disgraced, Prime Minister.
