Well dont be.

Until you've gone hungry or have been beaten for your sexuality or imprisoned for no reason, with no civil rights, you cannot claim that these place are better then the US.

He'd been advocating for war with Iraq long before it ever came to vote.

which is not to say that Colin Powell should not be prosecuted for crimes against peace.

And begging your pardon, that's fucking ridiculous. I mean I can understand wanting to live somewhere else. I wouldn't mind moving to NZ or Europe. Iceland would be nice, if they'd have me. Hell, even Canada, (though I expect Jedi to do everything to block my immigration.) But the idea that "Anyplace else is better than here" is just fucking dumb.

Just an unpopular opinion I suppose. Just how far the political discourse over the past few years has pushed me, in a way.

"Don't be" as in "Don't be desperate to leave for a worse country" or "don't be" as in "don't be desperate to leave because there is no better country"? I'm assuming the former.

While I may not want to move to Saudi Arabia (the "living as a gay man in Saudi Arabia" part was simply to show my desperation to leave), I definitely no longer want anything to do with or associate myself with a country as embarrassing as the US. As I mentioned, I do plan to leave sometime within the next 2-3 years (hopefully sooner). I would like to go somewhere maybe in Europe or Asia, just depends on where the wind takes me.

Yes that is a perfectly reasonable stance.

If I were American, I would want to leave too.

But keep it at that, because to any other rational person, the idea of leaving the US to go to Saudi Arabia, or a comparably awful country, just makes you sound like a lunatic.

Seconded. When we say that the United States is an awful place to live, the unspoken qualifier is: by the standards of high-income democracies.

Basically a third-world country with a first-world hat on, imo (not literally, that's just my analogy).

Again no it's not.

You might not like it, you might hate living there, but its not some dystopia that is unlivable.

Sorry, I edited my post to clarify. I added that I didn't mean it literally, but it was just my analogy. Sorry for the confusion.

I mean.. I was totally relaxed during this election simply by not watching the news at all. I was here, watching a map, .538 and running maths on an Excel program.

I was talking about this with a friend, that if you view America through the prism of the news it's all aflame and fighting, but as he noted people are having BBQs, taking their kids to soccer, most of America is perfectly charming and peaceful.

Increasingly I'm not too bothered with the news, it's a bit like my attitude to emails, if it's important someone will come and tell me.
