In my opinion, it's better to die fighting for your life than to give up and await your end on your knees. We'd be remembered better for perishing trying to stop this disaster than we would be if we said "there's nothing we can do, so let's just take it."

No you won't. Because most people want their new iPhones, their new cars, they want their lights on and their plastic wrapped whatever it is.

And for some bizarre as fuck reason the climate lobby has chosen the path of most resistance. Almost like it's been captured by other interests and being used as a cudgel.

So. Either the climate lobby can reform, and try to chart a course that both allows for modern conveniences and saves the climate (first step would be to take the anti-nuclear lobby out back and shooting it.) Or they continue on their present screeching self-righteous course and hit the first rule of Security planning.

If your security measures are too inconvenient to the end user, they will be bypassed.

They should be tried for crimes against humanity. And the politicians that took money from them need to be thrown in jail. Climate change overwhelmingly affects people in poverty, but the scumbags that caused it will be perfectly fine.

Oh, you misunderstand! TEL isn't making a value judgement of himself, he's decrying the hypocrisy of those dastardly climate activists who want cleaner air.

He's safe in being consistent with the fact that he wants the new iPhone and is contented with breathing sulfur for the rest of his days.

For a rejoinder Rojava can appreciate.

What is more important to you, fucking that hot neighbor you're not married to, or not being burned forever in a lake of fire later on?

You run into the same issue christians do. You're asking people to make their lives noticably worse to avoid some ephemeral future pain.

That was TEL's singular good take, sure. The rest of his argumentation is trash and deserves to be called out as such.

Except the pain isn't ephemeral, it's quite permanent and long-lasting (unless you lack object permanence), and isn't in the future, it's happening right now.

Also, there's nothing inherent in dramatically reducing emissions that requires a drop in the quality of life. The economy versus environment problem is a false dichotomy peddled by corporate misinformation campaigns so they can keep profiteering out of making our lives worse, and so we'd thank them for it.

And your question was unimportant to me, as the only thing I would do with an iPhone is throw it into a furnace or smash it with a rock.

When your argument is that the planet will be on fire if you don't do X. And then you say it's happening right now... And it's very visibly not on fire?

Yes. I'd like to see packaging regulations showing the embodied energy in all sorts of products. Like the way ingredients and nutritional panels on food have enabled at least some people (who care about their health) to make better buying decisions. We could do that for energy requirements of any saleable product, then move on to use of polluting, rare or unethical materials in everything we buy.

Well I want a range of new-technology reactors built, at a loss (implying government subsidies or partnerships), since whichever is best in practice will be the prototype for a whole new fleet to be mass-manufactured. But the ones that are second best will be decommissioned. Each new reactor being architect-designed and subtly different from those before, is a bad model cost-wise.

I'm still suspicious of why TEL is in favor of fission reactors though. I see them as a trade-off between nuclear waste (bad) and almost zero-emissions power, dispatchable (good). But if TEL doesn't give a rat's arse about carbon emissions it follows that It just likes the fact that reactors produce highly dangerous waste (albeit in small amounts) which presumably can be sold on the open market to home experimenters wishing to build their own dirty bombs ...
