It's not really a coder forum, just a forum where anyone can talk about computers. You don't really need to be on par with a coder there.

Xeroism looks like an interesting science fiction concept, but I'm not going to convert or anything, for obvious reasons. Cool scifi isn't something I'm going to actually believe in.

I actually partially agree with Valrifell - to the individual user (IE, the customer), a self-aware AI seems less than useless. An AI is a useful tool to do what you want, a self-aware AI is likely to be a hinderance at least sometimes.

If we start to consider the AI as less of a tool and more as a sentient being with its own wishes then it becomes less of an issue, since there is a point where it begins to become awkward to treat a being approaching sentience as a tool.

Why would you have a human that's generally smarter in one regard when you can make several very specialized instruments that are wayyy smarter than any individual in the area I want them to be?

In other words, why would I want my glorified calculator be able to recite and interpret Shakespeare? That's a waste of limited resources and computing power better spent doing the task I want the AI to do.

The problem is there is no drive to let these things approach sentience. Sure, if it does then I would be saying dramatically different things, but machines with rights is a headache for no benefit.

Arguably, but he was also programmed to be obedient, which is a limitation to the sentience.

He did get a little cheeky at points, but always obeyed as far as I can recall.

I think I'd still feel uncomfortable with "owning" KITT if through the course of my interactions with him I got the distinct impression he was sentient, regardless of any obedience programming he may have. And it's not like I can even ask him if he chooses to continue to fight baddies with me, since inevitably the obedience programming would kick in and determine the answer for him.
