10 Mexican States threaten to Secede

The good news is, I can't find anything on this from google searches, anything really except what the OP has provided. It seems almost certain that nothing whatsoever will come of this.

Spanish language media is actually pretty active about it, and if you look up, say "federalist alliance mexico", stuff should come up.

On a serious note, it should be up to the citizens of those states to decide whether to secede in a referendum, not the governors alone and certainly not the federal government. Other than that, I know little about Mexican politics.

This is certainly an interesting... thing. Assuming they did break away, would they be able to sustain themselves? I dont know much about the economic status of the Mexican states so I'm not sure.

It's likely that secession would lead to the creation of more than one independent state, considering if they all left as-is it wouldn't be compact or contiguous. Mexico would also be cut off from five of it's states, so they may as well leave too.

That is to say it better not just be a Mexican two-state solution, the borders would be horrendous looking!

The majority of Mexicans if they read this thread would go ballistic. Have seen Mexican youtube videos which deal with the subject of the US has a plan to take Baja or some other Mexican states. You should read there comments. They become very nationalistic. Some even say the territories they lost in the war will one day be returned.

The Mexican Pres. said there will be no additional money to those states protesting. That making waves like they have done before in the past in order to get special treatment will not work. He said changing the distribution formula would require a legal change in the current law. The last time the Fiscal Coordination Law was changed was in 2007 which was strongly supported back then by the political parties which today are in the opposition corner (meaning they are no longer the majority). In other words, these Governors are having a tantrum in order to get more money from the Mexican federal government.
