IIRC, Muslims believe that saying Bismillahirahmanirrahim (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) to an animal's ear, facing the left side of the belly towards Qiblat (Mecca), resting the animal first, and then slitting said animal's throat at the neck (about the location of the Adam's apple) is several steps of the Halal procedure to slaughter an animal. You are free to correct this, if you are Muslim; my memory is a bit hazy.

According to several people, it helps "calm down" and instantly sedate the animal.

I don't think that is what he's referring, since that technically does not count as discrimination. After all, as not all restaurants and hotels serves Kosher-labelled products; so do not all serves Halal-labelled products.

It is hypocritical. It’s something that while not supported by most Pakistanis (in Pakistan, of course, the Western ones definitely almost all hate it), a very significant number are at least okay with it.
