World of Warcraft

Postby Treznor » Tue May 04, 2010 12:29 pm

About four years ago my girlfriend into a new game. I was there when she started playing because I gave her the computer she played on, and installed the software for her. Of course, it was World of Warcraft.

I resisted playing the game for a year. I'd heard it compared to Everquest, affectionately known as Evercrack because of the way it sucks people in and never lets go. It will eat your soul if you let it, and it certainly did for her. This wasn't a problem because we still did things together and I'm not someone who demands attention during all waking hours. She leveled up a Night Elf (you wanna talk about ears?) priest and another Night Elf rogue, made friends with folks in a guild and generally enjoyed herself.

Finally, after a year, I broke down and started up a character. I became a human warrior and began the laborious process of making my way to level 60. Of course, being new at the game it took me most of a year to get there because in addition to time constraints (damn my need to work for a living!) I was utterly clueless and generally sucked. Eventually I learned to research quests and monsters online, looked up hints for successful strategies by other players and got better. Now I have multiple "toons" on multiple servers, but my primaries are a Night Elf druid and a Gnome mage. I got burned out tanking on the human warrior, so haven't touched him in a long time.

I know I'm not the only one. I know Melkor plays a Horde character or three, although I seem to recall we're on different servers. I figure it's just as well; we don't need to be antagonists there as well as here. So here's my question to NSG: do you play World of Warcraft or a similar MMORPG? How did it come to eat your soul and what amusing anecdotes about your game do you have to share with us?

You'd be surprised how many military folk play WoW or D&D (in real life), or at least here. Eventually I got sick of tired of them talking about it at the dinner table with me having nothing but my high school memories of it, so they gave me a "recruit a friend" request and I found myself playing since. I only have one toon, a rouge troll, as he's by far the cutest thing; to add to his cuteness, I got him a nice Elwynn Lamb vanity pet. My favourate thing to do, oddly enough, is to get different uniforms for him to wear as he helps out the younger members of our guild. I got the full tux set, the latest winter cloeths set, and one set that just makes him look good.

Sadly though, this last year at school has been rough and our internet has gone down in quality (yay lowest bidder system) so I haven't played in months. Good news is, parts of my soul is returning.

I never got into WoW, but when the servers were up, I was totally into The Matrix Online. I had tons of bookmarks on my Firefox browser (still do) about everything MxO. I spent hours craftinng stories for my character because this was an MMO that focused on the Role Playing aspect. MxO created a great community that was like a family, or like a typical High School.

The servers closed down in August 1st 2009, and that began the community's project of building The Matrix Online Emu.

I used to play several MMORPGs because everyone I knew seemed to play one. Or two. Or more.

Then I got tired of them all, and I don't play any of them now. I prefer single-player games. 8)

It's incredibly sad but I actually find mining relaxing.

Still, I like my Thorax for cruising about in 0.7 or above and feeling pretty pimp. Still to scared to go into low-sec.

i got into ddo, it offered a free thing so nothing to lose. yup it sucked me in for about 3 months, i got bored with it/the endgame players didn't really care about anyone trying quests out first time. but pretty enjoyable nonetheless.
my first character i was pretty poor at using but i got used to how the quests go. my ranger. heh funtimes.
my second character a wizard rocked, great fun.
my most recent character a barbarian because swapping around the spells was frankly exhausting which is a nice break.

Greatest complaint is there isn't a damn manual in how to play the game, the intro thing for noobs is pretty poorly made last time i checked, where you got the situation of rogues not knowing what a trap was. biggest issues were usually the different types of players being new folks trying to figure out not to die and veterans powerlevelling and simply not helping out. a mixed bag of players but overall nice community i thought. sure there's a few folks who enjoy ruining stuff for the sake of it but meh they don't stick around long. i heard joining a guild was the way to go.
fuck that noise, oddly enough i never built any of my guys beyond level 17 (different levelling things compared to WoW i hear).

Biggest draw for me was playing about in a quest with really nice people biggest downside needs more missions+a manual+the odd time people who just ruin things.
Hardest part is figuring out how to use the character you create. Easiest part is having fun with fun folks.
oh and some of the content to buy (ie most of it you have to pay for extras unless you subscribe) is simply dire, so reading the online guides to the extras is well worth it.

I've played World of Warcraft, off and on, since December of 2004. The last I played was about a month and a half ago, when I let my account expire. I have four level 80 characters - an orcish rogue, an undead warrior, an orcish shaman, and a blood elven paladin. The orcish rogue was my first character, started Christmas Day, 2004.

I came about playing by way of the RTS Warcraft games, which I've played since the very first Warcraft game came out. I had not played an MMORPG before that time, and though I've tried others since (Warhammer, LotrO, DDO), none have held my attention or interest save for World of Warcraft.

I recently stopped playing, as I'm headed back out on the job market soon (read: unemployed soon), and as such am going to avoid ancillary costs like game subscriptions.

My interesting anecdotes all come from raiding Molten Core during the original game.

Anecdote One: We spent one whole raid having a Survivial hunter tank the core hounds throughout the Core. Makes me smile remembering it.

Anecdote Two: Back in the day, there was a short time period where bosses put the whole dungeon in combat, but did not lock people from zoning back in during that combat. As a consequence, we were able to get a Baron Geddon kill by graveyard zerging from Thorium Point over the course of 15 or so minutes.

Anecdote Three: The Sulfuron Harbinger is a boss that has six priests with him. They heal him and each other if within range, and so the conventional methodology was to pull them away, one by one, to kill until they were all dead, then to kill the harbinger. My guild failed at this, big time. After a few failed attempts, our frustrated guild leader said, and I quote, "Fuck it, let's just AOE them the fuck down". He assigned a rogue, mage or shaman to each priest for interrupting their spells, and we went to it. Killed them all that first time :3

Warcraft ruined my marriage!!

Ok, there were other things involved, but I used to come home from classes to find the husband had lost another job so he could raid Ironforge or something. It started off pretty chills - we'd run some dungeons together, kill Alliance folks, but it got out of hand. I'm guilty of getting addicted to it after we split for a year, but my new man teased me about it so much that I eventually realized the follies of my ways, canceled my subscription, and deleted it off my computer.

Overall I'd have to say that crack is a valid comparison.

To be honest, it's for similar reasons that I really don't advertise my playing it in real life. I too know a man who lost his job due to MMORPG's, and he lives with his in-laws, now. It's embarrassing to be associated with that, and you know anyone who knows will have it in the back of their minds if/when you have any problems with work/relationships...

Yet I find games very easy to take or leave but struggle with actual drugs.

I probably shouldn't mention this, but you can download the entire installation over the web without having to constantly swap out disks.

Of the other mods, Tsaraine plays Alliance (I rolled a toon on his server but haven't played it in ages)... I know Euroslavia plays (I forget which faction), and I play Alliance, with my main Night Elf Druid (boomkin/resto) on KT; currently working on levelling a Draenai Hunter.
