There were underwater nuclear weapon tests, but they were pretty horrible.

1. If nukes sink submarines, that's bad: ballistic missile submarines might duel to the death or until one of them runs out of ammo. Bad for ocean.
2. If nukes don't sink submarines, that's real goood. Pentagon. Pacific Ocean. Floor Bases. Good for the rest of the Missile Age

Yes I know. "Nuclear Power" has two meanings. Language osteopathy is required. Drop the honorific: bad boys get "nukes" and we'll fission.

This. It’s a slow release over a decade and it’s being filtered.

The original radioactive waste that was sent into the ocean dissipated years ago.

People forget, or don’t understand, that water, especially salt water, is great at absorbing radiation.

Any old thing is good at absorbing radiation, it's something about cross-section of the nucleus eh

As far as I'm aware the science seems to suggest this is safe to do, what is the issue?

The only issue I can see is a potential impact on the Japanese fishing industry. Not because the release itself is harmful, but because certain people will be less inclined to buy or consume Japanese fish or seafood products.

Causing the price to drop for those (probably Japanese) who make a point of buying Japanese fish or seafood.

As I understand it, Japan is a nett fish importer. If the Japanese fish industry doesn't have the bottle they can take it on the nose

It actually isn't anywhere near as bad as that title implies. Not great, but there we have it.
Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

I was thinking that. If the anti-fission people want to keep the stuff from being released into the environment, maybe they'd like to buy some and take care of it themselves?

  • Convenient sizes of containers (1l 2l 4l) filled with radioactive water.
  • Frozen to reduce the risk of spillage in air-freight.
  • Must be (refrigerated) air-freight, due to high risk of rail or ship.
  • Kept frozen at the airport, and during delivery by courier.
  • Customer is advised to keep bottled radioactive water frozen.
  • Customer is advised to return water for re-bottling every five years.

Then send them a bill for the carbon emissions.

What kind of strange take is this? Anyone who's anti-fission wouldn't want this to occur in the first place. It'd be like asking people opposed to a local chemical plant to take care of the resulting pollution in the river themselves... it makes no sense.

This. It really isn't, which is explained by multiple scientists and committees. Especially over here it's mostly the media going: "ERMERGERD JAPAN IS GOING TO CONTAMINATE THE OCEANS!!!11111"

Eventually this is as far as I know, the safest and most controlled way of getting rid of all the waste of the Fukushima plant. Also remember that this water is/will be treated before it is released and the levels of radioactivity are very closely monitored to be within safe parameters (Which some media tend to leave out or plain ignore for their convenience).

I've even seen media comparing it to oil spills and such. So yea..

Yes it still isn't the best solution, but sadly I think it is the only solution to keep the ground from contaminating further and more problems arising.

given that water is one of the best radiation shielding materials around, this sounds like another case of people who don't understand nuclear science even at like a high school level freaking out and freaking everyone else out and causing a hysteria where there wasn't any need for one
