Centrist Discussion Thread

Postby Magical Medical League » Sat Oct 17, 2020 2:51 pm

Hello everyone.

There have been various leftist and right-wing discussion threads in the history of NS, but never any threads I can find related to those with politics that are mostly centre. Therefore, I wanted to make "Centrist Discussion Thread"

Some topics for discussion are included for your convenience:

Reasons to reject left and right wing politics
Centrist views on the economy
Centrist views on the social and cultural status
Centrist news and current events
Problems present in society, and centrist solutions
The possibility of compromise with left and right in centrism
Areas where you agree with the left and right

We can also discuss "what is centrism", "how can centrism survive", and "what policies on the left and right are generally supported by centrists?"

For the purpose of starting this thread, I will answer my own questions for you.
Firstly, I think centrism is not necessarily someone with centre-positions on everything, but instead someone who may have some leftist views on certain areas, and then right-wing areas in another. For example, someone who is culturally conservative but maybe favours more distributism. I think centrist can survive by becoming more flexible and continuing to take more ideas from the two sides.

I think there have been centrist discussion threads, but they tend to die out.

What I have in mind with centrism is similar to yours but in a slightly different style. I've always pictured a more pragmatic approach - not adhering to a set ideology but taking whatever situation is best (I know quite a few here who would suit that style).

Centrism is still the dominant ideology and will be fine because it encompasses actually doable systems, unlike the extremes. It will gain back its popularity, eventually.

Given that centrism is the absence of conviction or ideology rather than any manifestation of it, and is only defined in relation to other things, I predict either a swift death for this thread or a rapid transition to other topics (say, the ideological debates that define wherever the bounds of centrism may currently lay in various countries)

Centrism is not the same as political apathy.

I imagine this thread will eventually be overrun by non-centrists, just like the Anti-Socialism thread has been overrun by socialists.

I think centrist parties are allowing themselves to be swallowed up by left-wing SJW types as they don't have the conviction to say 'no' to rampant appeasement. Fortunatly France is making steps in the right direction by talking openly against religious seperatism.

On a different talking point, centrism doesn't have to involve a 'golden mean fallacy'.

That's true, however I'd still be surprised if this thread lasts long.

You mean the ideology that led up to the climate crisis and automation? That one will last?

Please briefly describe your political stances. Which ones do you believe make you "centrist" and not "leftist" or "right-wing"?
