I mean, you'll still find blonde and fair skinned Greeks. Just like how you'll find swarthy northern Europeans. Hell, look at Catherine Zeta-Jones; everyone thinks she's Spanish or Mexican but she's from fookin' Swansea.

The Black Forrest wrote:Yea I saw this nonsense. I remember awhile ago they tried to declare King Tut was a black Pharaoh even though there was ancient artwork showing a tanish Tut fighting black Nubmians. Questioning the claim got you labeled as racist.
Cleopatra was the descendent of one of Alexanders generals. You could argue for a tanish greek looking woman.
There is this simplistic mentality that only actors from a particular people can play people from the past.

Most white people look the same, but if you told a French guy and a Russian guy that they looked basically the same you'd never hear the end of it.
That ringing you hear in the background is the residual sound of an Irish man screaming forever after being told "you're a really handsome guy. Are you British?"

Actually a really good point can be drawn out of this...
A part of human psychology is to try and draw clear lines of recognition based on allegiances. It could come in the form of flags, assumed skin-color groups (Germans didn't used to be considered "white", but "swarthy"), even languages (Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian).
For instance, I have a strong preference for American English and think it more reformed; others feel differently, and we tend to draw lines based on that. I wonder if something similar is going on in trying to define Greeks as "white" or "Mediterranean" like with the Germans.

They were tan, olive, Mediterranean. Their own hieroglyphs suggest this. Nubians were depicted as black, and Greeks as white.
Strange how they depicted the Greeks tbh. The Greeks themselves aren't exactly pale, aside from this one guy I know but he's half German and Scottish.

That is an interesting part of the problem with ancient paintings.
If someone or a group of people is darker than you then said they were black. Likewise if they were fairer you said they were white.
Along comes a painter who has never seen the people in question and guess what shade gets pulled out ?
A roman painter who has never seen a Sicilian might paint him as coal black and a Eygtian painter who ahs never seen a Greek might paint them as snow white.

Tuscan painters trying to paint Sicilian mafiosos fighting African immigrants: "My paintbrushes have failed me."

I myself don't define race. To me ethnicity is real but not race. I feel very uncomfortable calling a Sicilian man with brown skin white and an Arab woman with ivory skin brown. And it's weird calling T.I. black when he's actually like peanut butter colored.
