Disagree: Greece hs had a significant admixture of Asian (Turkish/ Jewish/ Arabic) genes during the Ottoman empire. Back then, there were whole lot more blond and blonde-ish Greeks. Alexander the Great was blonde. Cleo's grandmother was blonde.

We should look for whatever colour the Macedonians USED TO BE 2000 YEARS AGO.

You want to paint all of history black?
Sure, go for it.
But I regard it as just as disgusting as whitewashing.

It's racist.
It's cultural appropriation.

Ancient Egyptians were clearly not black. The myth of Phaeton, where he drove the sun chariot too close to the ground, states that the sun chariot burnt the Ethiopian’s skin, this was how ancient Greeks explained black people, and it’s telling because they specifically mentioned "Ethiopians," not Egyptians. At the time, "Ethiopia" referred to everything South of the Sahara and the Nile for the Greeks (what we now call Ethiopia was known as Abyssinia).

A black actor playing Cleopatra(and I'm still waiting for someone to tell me whether this film is portraying the historical figure or the Shakespeare character) would not paint all of history black. It's not as if this casting choice is going to be replicated in every work created for the next hundred years.

OK. Fine.
And I nominate Antonio Banderas to play Martin Luther King in whatever biopic is coming up.

The arguable difference being MLK being black was a central trait of his character.

Now if the movie is a historical movie as opposed to the Shakespearean movie then one could make the argument her being Greek was a big part of her character as well. She was the first to speak Egyptian in her family and that doesn't really make sense if she is an ethnic Egyptian. It ceases to be a big deal.

Would you be fine with Dwayne Johnson or Jason Statham playing Shaka Zulu, if they're to make a film featuring South African history?

they did have a white actor play shaka Zulu in the 1970's made South African version. It was an interesting movie. I didn't know that Shaka Zulu agreed that the Zulu should serve the Boers forever in exchange for ridding them of the British. But that's how the film ends.

Methinks there might have been some National Party propaganda in that movie...

No, I mean that you may be confusing a film about Dingane and Blood River or about Mpande with one about Shaka.

I don't follow what you're trying to say. Besides you mixing up old films from the South Africa is definitely not the topic of the thread.

If it happens I might formulate an opinion, but I'm sure the opinions of someone with some kind of connection to the Zulu people would be more relevant. Like, you know, a Zulu person. The Zulu people, unlike the Ptolemaic dynasty, do still exist. Maybe someone could ask King Goodwill who he thinks should play his great-great-great-granduncle.

But perhaps consider that the liberal "colour blind" view of race is not actually a very useful one. The society we live in is not one that has overcome and abolished racism.

It is definitively more useful than the rediscovery of racialism that is currently gaining popularity within certain segments of the liberal left (at the cost of alienating virtually everyone else)

Because they're making a movie about Cleopatra with historical accuracy in mind, and historically-acurately-speaking Ancient Egyptians weren't black, much less Cleopatra - who is a Greek, I would have thought that they would cast a person representative to the Ancient Egyptian skin tone, Gal Gadot included. There is no relations between this and "painting the history black or white or brown or blue or purple or green, etc." The filmmakers had historical accuracy in thought when they cast the actress. That's pretty much the end of it, and I agree with them.

To each their own opinion.
