They've been very effective in countries that actually have free and fair elections and free speech.

The Weimar Republic, particularly Bavarian authorities, did not respect the freedom of speech of left-wing groups. There were multiple occasions when left-wing rallies were pre-emptively shut down because they were said to be too provocative, disruptive, or likely to become violent -- but then NSDAP rallies were permitted. That's not freedom of speech.

It's also important for laws to be enforced fairly. The sentence for crimes like murder or vandalism should be the same regardless of which side of the political spectrum someone is on. That was not the case in 1920s Munich. The sentencing for the Beer Hall Putsch was a joke. Allowing people to espouse Nazi theory or display Nazi symbols does not mean you have to give them a free pass when they commit violent crimes. To bring this into a modern context, people like Dylann Roof or those idiots that took over Malheur Wildlife Refuge should be kept off the street for a long time. They've demonstrated that they're willing to act out in ways that threaten public safety.

A guy who is flying a Nazi flag on his pick up truck or running for office on a platform of "ending Jewish control of our banks" does not belong in the same category as someone who has committed a violent crime. Hitler was in the violent criminal category even before he came to power, and the criminal justice system should not have coddled him.
