Mandatory Vaccinations 「Yes or No」?

Postby Sanghyeok » Wed Oct 14, 2020 12:49 pm

This post was somewhat influenced by the below articles, as well as seeing discussions on the "danger" of measles and flu vaccines.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... us-vaccine
“The study shows how uncertain large proportions of the population are about vaccines, and how much this is tied up with where they get their information, but also their broader underlying beliefs and values."

https://www.pewresearch.org/science/202 ... 9-vaccine/
The share who would definitely get a coronavirus vaccine now stands at just 21% – half the share that said this four months ago.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 162410.htm
The U.S. saw 1,282 confirmed cases in 31 states -- the greatest number reported since 1992, with nearly three-fourths linked to recent outbreaks in New York, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most cases were among people who were not vaccinated against measles.

As can be seen above, the amount of people who are willing to receive vaccines or express confidence in them- coronavirus and otherwise- is really low. This is combined with the fact that a lot of people in many countries have lower than ever confidence levels in vaccines- which is not helped by the amount of fake conspiracy theories being spread on the internet. So the question becomes, for the sake of greater good, should vaccinations be mandatory? Those who argue for mandatory vaccination note that vaccines are safe and effective, as well as protecting those who cannot be vaccinated such as the very young, sick, those with reactions, and old. Meanwhile, those against claim it mainly on moral reasons, saying that such a measure is infringing on the rights of the individual of whether or not to undergo medical treatment.

My personal opinion is yes- if the vaccines are produced and rigorously tested, there is no reason not to have all able people receive it, since it will protect not just others but also themselves. I do not think there should be exceptions to the "able people receiving the vaccine being mandatory" rule. But that is my opinion, and you are welcome to debate below.

Also, I tried to make a new title, but I can't think of anything better than 「Yes or No」so I'm sorry >.<

Yes. I think this is similar like a mask rule, where we should do it for the sake of those who are more vulnerable.

No, but if they are, who cares? Autism is not bad. The people who are afraid of vaccines because they think it will give their kids autism? Kinda reveals that they have a sh*tty opinion of autism. People who are "on the spectrum" are not any less human because of it, or less valuable as people. Any belief to the contrary is disgusting.

One concern I genuinely understand is "corporate profits" of the pharmaceutical companies. Perhaps a good solution is nationalisation, but government trust would need to be high.

I'm incredibly grateful for vaccines and wouldn't care if they were made mandatory. That being said, if a vaccine is released before it's ready for political reasons, I would be much more hesitant to take that vaccine for my own safety and that should not be mandatory.

Certainly, politics is a reason to be concerned.

Absolutely. The only exemptions should be for medical reasons, and even then, I'd probably want three doctors to say "yes" to ensure that it's not used illegitimately.

I am curious about the argument for those who argue [no].

One argument I can think of is the liberal one- the government shouldn't be forcing people to undergo medical treatments without their consent, regardless of how minor a treatment it is, based on the precedent it sets.

Also, very ironic you're using this nation, Sanghyeok.

1) some people can’t be vaccinated due to medical issues so a mandatory vaccination for them doesn’t really work.

2) you can’t force adults to get medical treatment or procedures if they don’t want them.

3) although I do believe that if you can, you should be vaccinated, no excuses, again, we don’t tend to force procedures or treatments on adults against their will.

It does seem to be the way to go but I have some stipulations. A more conservative approach should be taken for people's safety. I'd say it's illegitimate if any mandatory vaccines haven't been around for at least 10 years and haven't been sufficiently vetted in terms of testing. Any vaccines that're too new or experimental should be optional.
