Hypothetical: Which party would you rather vote for?

Postby Nouveau Yathrib » Tue Oct 13, 2020 12:46 pm

In this hypothetical, let's say you are a registered voter in a representative electoral democracy with a two-party system, The voters in your country happen to favor left-of-center economic policies and right-of-center social policies, and can be said to hold communitarian views. (See here and here for more info on communitarian voters in the United States.) Unlike in many real-world electoral democracies, both major parties in your country rely on communitarian-minded voters, and therefore run on communitarian platforms.

Image

TL;DR-
Labor and Faith Party (LFP): Religious Left, cosmopolitan, internationalist
National People's Party (NPP): Secular Right, law-and-order, nationalist

The two parties' platforms and positions are described in more detail below (source). I changed the name of one of the parties to make the hypothetical less US/West-centric.

Inspired by the other thread and also by my observation that the label "socially conservative, economically liberal/leftist" fits two different kinds of worldviews.

Labor and Faith Party (LFP):
[*]Anti-abortion
[*]Anti-death penalty
[*]Pro-"religious freedom"; generally pro-LGBT rights, but wants clear conscience exemptions.
[*]Very pro-immigration, especially for refugees of any background.
[*]Strong emphasis on "social justice".
[*]Economically somewhat more left-wing and strongly supportive of universalist programs, including for immigrants.
[*]Somewhat pro-free trade overall.
[*]Environmentalist. Opposes all fossil fuels, strongly supports investing in renewable energy/nuclear and plant-based/lab-grown meat.
[*]Internationalist in foreign policy.

National People's Party (NPP):
[*]Pro-choice
[*]Pro-LGBT rights
[*]Very secularist (favors public burqa bans as well as restrictions of hijab wearing)
[*]Pro law and order, including being pro death penalty.
[*]Strongly nativist, favoring severe reductions in immigration numbers
[*]Civil libertarian, opposes "Political Correctness" culture.
[*]Economically accepting of broad universal benefits for citizen working-class population, but opposes extending benefits to immigrants and "underclass scroungers".
[*]Somewhat protectionist overall, favors keeping industry and manufacturing within the country's borders.
[*]Pro fracking and natural gas, seeks to reduce carbon emissions by investing in public transport and restricting population growth.
[*]Nationalist in foreign policy.

Which party would be closer to your overall political views, and which one would you vote for in your real-life country?

I would definitely vote for the Labor and Faith Party in the US, even though I am pro-LGBT rights, pro-choice, and strongly support separation of religion and state. A US version of the NPP sounds like it would be overlap more with the alt-right than I am comfortable with, even though I would agree more with them on civic nationalism and keeping jobs in the local community. I would probably be more likely to vote LFP compared to most of my friends who had similar upbringings and come from similar backgrounds as myself, since I prioritize social justice and environmental issues more than they do. Of course, this is all contigent on the LFP being more religiously pluralist and welcoming of non-Christians, non-Abrahamic believers, and the religiously unaffiliated.

I'll take my chance with LFP and hope for the best. They have more of what what I support (although I'm probably more fine with LGBT rights, not anti-abortion, or too insistent on Social Justice to a great extent).

NPP have the first two options and Civil Libertarianism, but I'm not a fan of how secular they're being, or really any of their other policies.

Also much of voting has now just turned into choosing who will be more easy-going (which LFP probably will be), rather than the stronger leader.

The overtly pro-religion stuff would annoy me, but it's better than the opposition by a long way, so I'd be an Atheist voting for the Faith party, lol.

I think this plot you threw in shows how, unsurprisingly, the vast vast vast majority of Americans don't support laissez-faire economics, yet will vote for candidates who do because they're fooled by the "average man populism."

I like the religious left. It reminds me somewhat of Christian democracy, or some Latin American countries, or liberation theology. Religious freedom, and all. I like this fresh take, and I voted for it in the poll.

And as for the other party, right-wing populism is actually worse when combined with extreme secularism. Xenophobia, and all.

"Law and order" by itself isn't fascist, but "law and order" combined with "opposes extending benefits to immigrants and 'underclass scroungers' " kind of sounds fascist.

I wonder if the poll results would be less skewed in favor of Labor and Faith if there weren't as many right-wing populist governments in power around the world.

While I am disturbed by the LFP's religious overtures, they don't actually appear to do anything very much to the policy positions the party takes and also the NPP support several of the "evils" which dictated my IRL voting choices in the last election so... the LFP.

EDIT: I just realised I misread "anti-abortion". It must be said that I don't overly care about abortion and, in any case, we technically only legalised it... this year(?) anyway. Yeah, it was this year. The reasons why it was "technically" legalised are that (1) while decriminalised it was managed within the crimes act and (2) you basically had to get a doctor to rubber stamp a mental health exemption to get an abortion, but the realistic assumption would be that a doctor would do this.

I'd rather deal with the downsides of a limp-wristed, pro-'sjw' and broadly multi-religion and cultural government than a nationalist populist type government.

The stances on abortion, supporting free trade (rather than fair trade) and conditional LGBT support are unfortunate, though. I like the environmentalism, compassion emphasis and rejection of the barbaric practise of the death penalty, however.

They don't have to only be Christian. My ideal version of the LFP would also include Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Baha'i, and members of other faiths. Hopefully that's enough #diversity to prevent the party from being an Evangelical + Catholic circlejerk.

Firstly... if these are my only candidates, what the hell has happened to politics in my country?

Neither party will get my vote. I cannot, in good conscience, vote for an anti-abortion party, and I cannot vote for the second option -- a nationalist party that views the death penalty as "law and order". I cast a vote for a third party candidate (if they exist, and align with me politically) or write "none of the above" on my ballot paper.

Then I look at moving elsewhere.

NPP hands down. I mean, seriously, just look at the good v evil breakdown.

Labor and Faith Party (LFP):
[*]Anti-abortion - EVIL
[*]Anti-death penalty - GOOD
[*]Pro-"religious freedom"; generally pro-LGBT rights, but wants clear conscience exemptions. - GOOD
[*]Very pro-immigration, especially for refugees of any background. - STRAIT FROM THE PITS OF HELL
[*]Strong emphasis on "social justice". - EVIL. We all know what this word means these days and it ain't pretty. Indeed it is the opposite of true social justice and equality.
[*]Economically somewhat more left-wing and strongly supportive of universalist programs, including for immigrants. - EVIL. If I understand wikipedia right Universalism is basically the idea that world interests > national interests. And for a government to hold that view is high treason.
[*]Somewhat pro-free trade overall. - EVIL
[*]Environmentalist. Opposes all fossil fuels, strongly supports investing in renewable energy/nuclear and plant-based/lab-grown meat. - Half and half. The energy thing is nice but I am categorically opposed to growing meat in a way that does not kill an animal.
[*]Internationalist in foreign policy. - STRAIT FROM THE PITS OF HELL
So Good: 2, Evil: 5, Meh: 1

National People's Party (NPP):
[*]Pro-choice - GOOD
[*]Pro-LGBT rights - GOOD
[*]Very secularist (favors public burqa bans as well as restrictions of hijab wearing) - GOOD
[*]Pro law and order, including being pro death penalty. - 50/50 Law and order are absolutely necessary. And whilst I am against killing people I'll give them that if it means I get law and order.
[*]Strongly nativist, favoring severe reductions in immigration numbers - GOOD. Only invite in those that we need and want.
[*]Civil libertarian, opposes "Political Correctness" culture. - GOOD
[*]Economically accepting of broad universal benefits for citizen working-class population, but opposes extending benefits to immigrants and "underclass scroungers". - 50/50 I completely agree for migrants but disagree for the underclass. A nation must protect its own but we can't just invite people in and than have them become dependent on us.
[*]Somewhat protectionist overall, favors keeping industry and manufacturing within the country's borders. - GOOD
[*]Pro fracking and natural gas, seeks to reduce carbon emissions by investing in public transport and restricting population growth. - EVIL, MORE ATOMIC NOW!
[*]Nationalist in foreign policy. - GOOD. A country should take care of it self and its own and but out of meddling with foreigners.
So Good: 7, Evil: 1, Meh: 2
