Your basic point is sound - Taft won only 8 electoral votes in a year where 531 electoral votes were available and finished third; an unprecedented result that's surely the most humiliating defeat of an incumbent president in US history.

However, your final statement is problematic. Polls currently show Biden leading in 28 states (excluding the District of Columbia), and tied in a 29th.

Biden may not win all 28 - I would be mildly surprised if, for example, he were to win Georgia - but there's a decent chance he'll win fewer than 25 states and finish behind Bush Sr. in electoral votes won.

He'll do better than Taft, Hoover, and Carter, though; and he will get a higher percentage of the vote than Bush Sr. And even if he loses every state where Biden currently leads plus (currently tied) Ohio, on a percentage of electoral votes won, he'll do better than Martin Van Buren in 1840 - who only won just over 20% of the electoral votes available - though he may struggle to get past Van Buren's 46.8% of the popular vote. On top of that, two presidents (Pierce and Andrew Johnson) ran for re-election but - in the ultimate humiliation - failed to even make it past the party convention. So of the 12 presidents who ran for re-election and failed, Trump will do better on at least one measure (percentage of popular vote or percentage of electoral vote) than at least 7 of them.
