Tbf in the case of the Klan it was done to prey on the sensibilities of a very superstitious southern population at the time. Maybe if “many” translates to a relative few who are predominantly in far-right rural militias who are already known to have been prepping for “the collapse” or a civil war for decades now then sure, but there most likely aren’t all that many people geared up or gearing up for an actual war, most people are just trying to live their lives as peaceful as possible. If anything people are panic buying ammo and guns and what not these days to defend against the kind of people who would try to kick off a civil war (and most likely fail at it) rather than doing so to fight in a war. Or they’re panic buying cuz, like during most election seasons and in the aftermath of very public shootings, they think someone is gonna take all their guns or some other paranoid shit (which is think is the most likely reason). More street violence and shootings are something I can see, but a civil war is quite a bit of stretch right now, maybe in a few decades if we fuck up and do nothing and climate change gets as bad as some projections say and things get so bad so fast as to make a civil war, along with major wars in general, not only likely but almost certain.
