Why wouldn't cheesecake be a cake?

The definition of bread isn't important. So, um, I don't know.

However, since breads can be flat, I don't think the exclusion rule is actually necessary.

If a baked good is (a) sweet, (b) raised with bicarb and (c) has an "appreciable" vertical component ... is it a cake only because there's nothing else it could be?

I mean... that's kind of how the term cake is used? And that was sort of the point of the "common sense" definition.

"Fully encased" makes no sense to me.

Imagine, for example, a chocolate cake in a pastry shell. That's not a cake. That's a pie with a chocolate cake filling. God knows why, but that's what it'd be. (For clarity... a pie should give the illusion that it's two separate things, i.e. the "case" and the filling).

Depends on the cheesecake. If it's a normal cheesecake with crust on the bottom, it's a type of toast. If it's actually layered, it's a cake.

So far, the poll results show that:

Nearly 56% think cupcakes are a cake
Nearly 58% think cheesecake (American-style) is a cake
60% think cheesecake (Japanese-style) is a cake
Nearly 56% think ice cream cake is a cake

Given that you can select all options—like I did—the results are essentially meaningless.

The more important question here is, how much cheese does cheesecake have?

If you invite people over for coffee and cake and serve cheesecake, literally no one is protesting that it is not a cake.

I would protest that there is coffee being served and not tea, but I get your point.

I assume everyone claimed "cake is a cake". I then took the percentage of people from each other category and divided by people who said "cake is cake".

And for those who suggest cheesecake is a pudding, what about Yorkshire pudding and black pudding?

A better question would be whether or not the following are cakes:

Crabcake.

Fishcake.

Potato cake.
