This is most likely because he knows the Reps don't have the numbers to vote in a new Justice immediately.

I'm sorry? By all accounts they already have the votes and are going to do it as soon as Trump picks. The only people who have said no are Murkowski and Collins, all the other vulnerable or moderate Republicans have either remained quiet or expressed support, which leaves them at 51 votes. Even if Romney jumps ship they still get a tie and they still win via Pence.

Pretty much this^. Even Graham says they have the votes. I think Romney will jump ship though that may be in the form of not voting. Either way, it's going to be a 6-3 court.

And we have a few new polls too at the moment:

In a new Iowa Poll by Selzer (A+ Rated), Biden and Trump are tied at 47%. And in Georgia, a poll done by the University of Georgia (B/C Rated) shows a tied there as well, with both candidates getting 47% too. In South Carolina, it's close: a poll by Morning Consult (B/C Rated) shows Trump leading 50% to Biden's 44%.

The Iowa poll was done before Ginsburg's death while the Georgia and SC ones were done from September 11-20; she passed on the 18th. We'll need to keep an eye out on what polling shows going forward over these next few weeks given we have a debate next Tuesday and whether Christians, particularly Evangelicals, will back Trump now given an open seat is back despite their reserves for the man.

But would that be politically smart though? The move could rile up reluctant Trump supporters to back Trump. Not to mention, some voters, particularly independents I would think, wouldn't take kindly to the process being hindered though there's a lot of uncertainty now: anything can happen. Certainly, they could delay it but if Trump wins, it won't matter.

On votes alone Trump will certainly lose, alas this election is not about votes alone.

Enjoy...

I see no reasons why mail in votes cant be received and counted before election nights, in early voting elections of all kinds, not just for President, for all early voting elections.

Some states have changed their law to allow that.

Well, Romney is on the side of 'if you can do it, you get to do it' camp of nominating a new Supreme Court justice and will vote for the nomination.

So there's that.

Hmm, you make a fair point. And now Democrats may have to do it: Romney supports holding a vote on next Supreme Court nominee. He will vote for the nominee based on their qualifications. So, there will be a floor vote at least, but whether that nominee gets confirmed (seems likely) is still up in the air.

Good to know so we'll pay attention to polls from this week and next. Should be quite interesting, especially if you say a majority of independents oppose such a move.

The majority of Georgians oppose such a move. But only just. Georgia is pretty much split down the middle on all issues.

These sorts of debates aren't won or lost in the context of the debate itself. They're exercises in generating news, in having the best one-liners and comebacks, in conveying the right image to fit one's broader campaign strategy, and of course in thwarting the other party from doing the same. It's entirely possible for both Biden and Trump to win the debate, or for them both to lose.

I think that's a good thing. The outcome was given from the start. Don't waste your time and energy on a lost cause, save it for the fights you can win.

And remember that elections have consequences. Remember the down ballot elections, which will matter more than the presidential elections. The Republican party has shown that it's all about raw power, so if the Democrats take the house and the Senate... well, turnabout is fair play. No need to care about "norms", "principles" or "the high road" when the other side doesn't give a shit about such things.

That is a smart move. It might not matter, since Florida refuses to tell them how much the owe, but it's a good thing to do.
