Well, last time around, the Mods just made a special final thread because they figured it would take the full 500 pages just for the few days from the election onward.
I don't think there's any technical reason for the 500 page limit. The longer the thread the worse, theoretically, but in practice posters hardly ever read the thread from the start when they're new to it, or quote early posts a hundred pages later. As I understand it, the Mods picked 500 because it seemed more than generous and was a round number.
Probably the only bad thing about letting a thread run to 1000 instead of 500 would be the precedent it would set.
Apparently Gaia Online uses a version of phpBB which they have modified up the wazoo. So it's not proof of anything that they had a thread about making a million page thread. Which succeeded. It's just funny.
