Gavin McInnes, who himself has openly embraced the far-right and alt-right mantel/label, even disavowed himself from the Proud Boys over their explicit white nationalism. That alone should really be quite telling, as should any real-world encounters with the Proud Boys. Have you met these guys in real life? They are clear cut white supremacists.

The Proud Boys as an org/movement may not explicitly claim white nationalism, but you see it from a bulk of their supporters.

Which part of the article was McInnes' disavowal included in? They are clear-cut extremists, certainly, but I do not see the organization going beyond that.

At most, this was a mistake by the moderator: picking a name Trump would recognize, rather than a less visible group known to be 100% white nationalists.

Trump saying "who?" would be just about the best result for him. Of course he couldn't fake it (Trump knows everything, except unimportant stuff that no-one knows) so being genuinely unaware of a named white supremacist group would be a good look!
