America, I stand ready to serve.

Set aside your constitution and appoint me as your leader, and I promise to rule you justly and wisely. There will be no peasant in my realm so poor that they will not have a chicken in their pot every Sunday.

If you're unsure as to whether or not this is an attractive offer, I merely ask that you consider the alternatives.

Hundreds of millions of Americans and the system produced these two as the candidates. Tell me more about freedom, democracy, and the eternal quasi-divine wisdom of the founding fathers and the institutions they established.

Joking aside, I've now done an admittedly utterly unscientific morning trawl through a selection of US media representing a range of political perspectives.

Left of centre media outlets are fairly unequivocal that Biden won the debate, while also arguing the entire debate was an embarrassment to US democracy.

However, right of centre media outlets seem to be much more equivocal about Trump; for example, as of 10:00 am UK time, the Fox News home page is running a combination of stories about how 'no one won' or 'the debate format is broken' alongside an opinion piece from Democratic Party congressmen Eric Swalwell arguing Biden won. I see nothing prominent arguing Trump won.

Now, obviously I wasn't able to watch the debate; or rather, I chose sleep over watching the debate. But if my only means of judging who 'won' was the subsequent media coverage, then it's hard to escape the conclusion that - insofar as anyone won that debacle - Biden 'won'.

So, who else is looking forward to the VP debate. Pence is more competent than Trump when it comes to content in debates.

He might even eat Harris alive.

Though that would mean his wife has to be on the podium too.

I wouldn't call him more competent. Trump had an extremely competent debate performance, and I think Pence will try to copy it. But somewhere, Pence still doesn't understand how Republicans are supposed to argue, so I wonder whether he will pull it off properly.

Tread carefully. Be too fair in your analogy and you’ll be accused of being a Trump supporter (i.e Trumpanzee, Trumptard, or Trumpian). As a centrist who tries to follow the fair and compromising road, this has happened to me more times than I care to count. Online and offline alike.

Oh, I want to make crystal clear that I am not trying to be fair. Trump did abysmally from an argumentative standpoint, but that's not what he is trying to do. He's an ur-fascist, and he simply wants to get his propaganda across. He is not there to convince anyone via reasoned debate. He is there to look strong and be undaunted, and that's what he has done. He has not convinced anyone, but that's not what he is trying to do.

It's a mistake liberals and centrists make, that everyone is coming to the table to debate, and the person who had the worst arguments lost. That's not how this works anymore, and it hasn't for the past eight years.
