It was supposed to be named Columbia but Congress rejected it due to what they thought would be confusion with the District of Columbia.

The state of Washington was named after George Washington. I have heard some argue that because George Washington was a slave owner, racist, and a homophobe that he shouldn't be glorified and that the state of Washington should be renamed. This is especially true since Washington is a heavily liberal state.

I am undecided on this, but I can definitely understand the arguments for not glorifying George Washington anymore. What do you think?

It’s pretty funny because I actually have a non-SJ reason to rename Washington State, namely it shares the same name as Washington, DC which leads to confusion. Instead maybe we can name it State of Jefferson.

Changing all the signs and letterhead and stuff would be really expensive. Why would they want to spend all that money for a boring name like Jefferson?

Not only no but hell no. You do know that he was the one that helped win the American Revolution. The only way that you can successfully rename a state is though Congress.

Some people argue that the American Revolution wasn't a good thing.

No, it's a stupid idea. Only people who might actually support such a thing are people who just want to feel like they're doing something "Good" without actually doing anything about the negative material conditions in the country.

Changing the name of the capital or a state will not improve the lives of anyone inside the nation. If anything it would hurt the country because money that could be put towards helping people will now go towards changing the name and reprinting things and dealing with the political fallout of people arguing over the name instead of helping others.

It'll just be another pointless thing designed to divide us and turn us against one another so of course some rich asshole is going to propose it one day.
