The fact of the matter is that the American Constitution is not able to conform to socialism and having our laws determined by a council of elders who interpret an arcane document written by the fathers of the people is a stupid basis for a system of governance.

Democratic Party policy (gun control, more government institutions, universal healthcare, and more immigration) are well within the bounds of European and Canadian mainstream left wing parties. While of course there are extremes in both directions, they're all on the same page. It feels more centrist or right-wing because the U.S. doesn't already have these institutions in place like Europe does, so they've really just got a headstart. The Democratic Party and its members wouldn't hold Europe up as a shining example if that weren't the case.

Universal Healthcare? The Democratic Party doesn’t support Universal Healthcare. Gun control isn’t a left wing policy. It’s just a policy. None of the American government interventions are nearly as expansive as Europe.

The Democratic Party is social left, while economically centre right. Which is the UK Conservative Party.

I think you're overestimating how much the average American will care about either. Pence breaking a tie is system working as designed. It'd be an odd thing to get upset over.

It was Mitch McConnell who further changed the rules the same way for the Supreme Court. Of course Schumer gave Kavanaugh a hard time: it's the Senate's role to consider and make judgement on the past of nominees.
