Again she did not have to, but she was fully aware that if she wanted her side to hold the seat, that was her best chance.
She chose not to take it. That was still her decision, and that decision had consequences.

Hmmm. Sounds like you are blaming her. I would redirect the “anger” towards the people who wish to subvert the institution.

I mean it is just a fact her decision not to had consequences. If you are 80, and your party holds the presidency and senate, you want them to hold the court seat a long long time, stepping aside for someone younger makes logical sense. And if you do not, the risk of dying and being replaced by someone from the other side is high.

I am not angry at her, but I am just pointing that fact out.

Well that's a victory for the Empire certainly. I'm not nice enough nor enough of a politically correct simp to pretend to have condolences towards her family so don't expect it. All that matters to me is the Political importance and how it might effect things going forward. Assuming Trump drags his feet and doesn't immediately fill it it might serve as strong encouragement for democrats to get the vote out. Gotta get the Presidency or Trump will fill that seat. On the otherhand Supreme court nominations tend to motivate Republicans a bit more so there is that.

Would it be better for Trump to fill the seat before the election and thereby ingratiate himself with his current base immediately hoping they don't forget this boon by November, or wait until after to put a fire in their ass? That is the question.

The base is always rallied, it's been remarkable simply how consistent his support has been among Republicans, the question is whether this moves the 5-6% of swing votes in his favour he needs.

The simple reality is they will push this through at all costs, apparently Trump quipped even Democrats would support a Cruz nomination if only to get him the hell out of Congress.

Given the sheer, near white hot rage and emotions coming from the Dem base right now, 2020 may very well turn out to be a slaughter for the GOP. If Scalia made Republicans rally around the top of the ticket, Ginsburg - who was practically beloved by nearly everyone who votes for Dems, or is Dem adjacent - may make the rallying look more like a tidal wave.

The fact that the GOP decided to boot out suburb folks - people who are the type to love Ginsburg - might have very well doomed them.

Trump already has his base maxed out in the rurals and exurbs. Democrats however, have a ton of room to grow in the urban and suburban areas.

She seemed like a fine, forward-thinking jurist who left a hell of a legacy.

This year sucks hard.

Definitely not looking forward to Republicans trying to replace her with Tom Cotton or some other warmongering authoritarian psychopath.

Sure, but there were a number of times during his last term that RBG had reasonable opportunity to bow out gracefully and President Obama fill her seat. She held too long, and by the time she realized Clinton wouldn't win, it was too late to bow out then.

I mean, RBG was one of the few figures who nearly every Democrat loved - the wealth of paraphernalia dedicated to her is evident enough. Not to mention, people have been becoming more political active and aware of what's going on, and with ActBlue raising 11 mil in the past two hours, something is happening.

During that time she was often a lone voice on the court with respect to issues like voting rights if I recall correctly. She didn't want the court to swing in the other direction.
