Well, close. Most of the time, it’s not used to mask racism. (I’m sure that’s happened somewhere, but it’s not the way these things generally happen. Most of the people doing the adoption do genuinely have good intentions. They genuinely want to improve the lives of the children they adopt. Let me be very clear, for posterity, so that nobody misrepresents this: You can have non-racist intentions, and yet further a racist system through optics. WSS refers to the image being projected of-as is alluded to-a white savior, who swoops in and fixes everything, through their access to greater resources given to them through a dual system that is designed to their benefit-capitalism on one hand, white supremacy on the other. Whether or not Barrett actually believes that she does this is entirely irrelevant to the cultural ideals it furthers.
