I have said this elsewhere, but I think Trump should be nominated. Is there a rule against the president also being a supreme court justice (if there is, it needs to be changed asap).

True. We could get stuck with Ted Cruz or Tom Cotton

Nobody can hold two different positions in government in the US. It would take a constitutional amendment to fix that

I really, really think they're going to put up Thapar though.

They've been grooming him for years and his friendship with McConnell wins him a lot of points.

This White House seems to operate on people they know rather than CVs more than any other Administration in memory. Note all the Wall Street types that did business with Jared all over the executive branch (Mnuchin, Esper, etc).

It's like how I feel over Gorsuch, I dislike his judicial philosophy, but all things considered he seems like a decent family man. As Therm said, could be Cruz or Cotton, which...yikes.

I don't think they'll nominate Cruz and Cotton is waaaaay too ambitious about 2024 to be a serious nominee unless they're trying to take him out of contention for the job.

Nominating Cruz or Cotton would be a dumb move, IMO. Makes a mockery of the court and increases the chances of the GOP coming up short on votes.

Agreed, anyone know when the last time the Senate has nominated a fellow Senator for the Supreme Court? I can't think of anything in recent history.

The only possibility I can see is the GOP removing Cotton as a competitor to Pence or Haley for 2024 by trying to put him on the Court.

I don't think they can afford a contentious pick right now though, especially if they try to do this before the election.

Barrett I can only see happening if they try to push it through in the lame duck session.

A fucking bulldog of a prosecutor though, who criticized the notion of judges being "pragmatic."

I don't know, I don't foresee myself appreciating any of the picks, obviously.
