When we get to WWII we talk about the war itself with off-hand mentions of genocide and what not by the Nazis. That's it. They rarely say anything more than "Jews", "genocide", and "death camps". They never go into any more detail than that.

They went into fair detail in my school. Though I doubt they do nowadays.

Thinking back on it, I think my class ended spending a week tops on WWII, with the justification that "everybody already knows this". And it was all ultra-basic information as well, like which major powers were on what side. In fact, the only two times Asia was mentioned was when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and when we nuked Japan.

As far as the Holocaust went, I think they basically said "6 million Jews died", showed us a few photos, and played Schindler's List for us (which was great, but still). They did mention some of the other groups killed as well, but definitely did not give a number to them. This also did not help prevent me from becoming a Holocaust denier for the several year span that I was a far-right libertarian.

More time was spent on things less relevant, such as Aztecs/Incans/Mayans, the EXACT timeline of the Early Middle Ages, and even the Bering Strait Land Bridge Theory. And most of the information presented turned out to be factually unsound or even downright wrong!

And this was, like, 10 years ago at this point in suburban Florida. I highly doubt the American education system has seen any improvement since then.

I think they can do this in more cities: piles of shoes, of people who were killed. People will not forget then.

Yad Vashem has something like that but it’s just children’s shoes. And there’s thousands of them. I threw up after seeing that.

I am already usually a very emotional person. I now understand why they say those places are not suitable for children. I read about it in textbooks, of course, but to see the clothes, shoes, even the gold teeth that the Nazis took from victims is disgusting.

Craziest thing is he wasn't some insane neo-Nazi. He was otherwise a pretty middle of the road dude who agreed with Dems on some things and the GOP on others, he just thought the Holocaust was as fake as WWE. It was a weird experience.

This is in fact to be expected of something that never even happened. The problem is all of the people to believe this fiction to have actually taken place, which it didn't.

Almost two-thirds of young American adults do not know that 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and more than one in 10 believe Jews caused the Holocaust, a new survey has found, revealing shocking levels of ignorance about the greatest crime of the 20th century.

According to the study of millennial and Gen Z adults aged between 18 and 39, almost half (48%) could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto established during the second world war.

Almost a quarter of respondents (23%) said they believed the Holocaust was a myth, or had been exaggerated, or they weren’t sure. One in eight (12%) said they had definitely not heard, or didn’t think they had heard, about the Holocaust.

More than half (56%) said they had seen Nazi symbols on their social media platforms and/or in their communities, and almost half (49%) had seen Holocaust denial or distortion posts on social media or elsewhere online.

“The results are both shocking and saddening, and they underscore why we must act now while Holocaust survivors are still with us to voice their stories,” said Gideon Taylor, president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) which commissioned the survey.

Taylor added: “We need to understand why we aren’t doing better in educating a younger generation about the Holocaust and the lessons of the past. This needs to serve as a wake-up call to us all, and as a road map of where government officials need to act.”

The survey, the first to drill down to state level in the US, ranks states according to a score based on three criteria: whether young people have definitely heard about the Holocaust; whether they can name one concentration camp, death camp or ghetto; and whether they know 6 million Jews were killed.

The top-scoring state was Wisconsin, where 42% of millennial and Gen Z adults met all three criteria, followed by Minnesota at 37% and Massachusetts at 35%. The lowest-scoring states were Florida at 20%, Mississippi at 18% and Arkansas at 17%.

Nationally, 63% of respondents did not know 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust, and more than one in three (36%) thought 2 million or fewer had been killed.

Eleven per cent of respondents across the US believed that Jews had caused the Holocaust, with the proportion in New York state at 19%, followed by 16% in Louisiana, Tennessee and Montana, and 15% in Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Nevada and New Mexico.

Nationally, 44% of those questioned were able to identify Auschwitz-Birkenau, and only 3% were familiar with Bergen-Belsen. Six out of 10 respondents in Texas could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto.

However, almost two-thirds (64%) of American millennial and Gen Z adults believe Holocaust education should be compulsory in schools. Seven out of 10 said it was not acceptable for an individual to hold neo-Nazi views.

The Claims Conference, whose mission is “to provide a measure of justice for Jewish Holocaust victims”, set up a taskforce to oversee the survey. It included Holocaust survivors, historians and experts from Yad Vashem and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Data was collected from 1,000 interviews nationwide and 200 interviews in each state with young adults aged 18 to 39 selected at random.

......

You heard right.

Less than 100 years after the holocaust, it seems about a quarter of younger Americans either believe it was a myth or exaggerated. However, as the article says "almost two-thirds (64%) of American millennial and Gen Z adults believe Holocaust education should be compulsory in schools. Seven out of 10 said it was not acceptable for an individual to hold neo-Nazi views."

What is your opinion on this?

Holocaust Denial is part of free speech. You take that away, and it leads to a slippery slope that eventually causes SOPA-like laws to pass.

Just think if the Holocaust was going on today we would be outsourcing our manufacturing to the Nazis because their labor is “cheaper”.

We really learned nothing.

Now we ignore any atrocity to get “cheap” electronics. So it is not surprising we care so little about atrocities that happened 75 years ago.
We economically support today similar, albeit on a lesser scale the same type of stuff now.

They have piles of shoes, prosthetics, kitchen stuff like pots and pans, clothes, and even human hair in Auschwitz-1. Auschwitz-Birkenau doesn’t have those due to lack of large enough buildings and to preserve the solemnness of the place. It was a chilling experience when the whole area was covered in snow when I went in February 2018.

The easiest way to show these kids what happened is a trip to the nearest Holocaust museum. Or bringing in a Holocaust survivor

Also showing them images of survivors is a good way to make sure they understand. Seeing damm near skeletal looking people is something that tends to stick with people as morbid as that is.

Jehova's Witnesses is a historically ignorant religion.

Jehovah is a corruption of the Jewish God Yahweh. Except during Roman times, J and Y are letters witht the same pronuncitation, I know this, since as a Filipino we have Spanish loanwords based on Latin (Spanish is a Romance language) and we still interchange J and Y, in much later English J became exclusively J pronounced alone however they interpreted the letter as pronounced as J instead Y in ancient Hebrew and J and Y having the Y interchangeable pronounciation during Roman times, only people ignorant of culture or history believe that God was called "J" as in "G" ovah and V as U was also interchangeable in Roman Times and only differenciated post-Rome.

Novus America represents my vision of an awesome Atompunk near future United States of America expanded to the entire North American continent, Guyana and the Philippines. The population would be around 700 million.
Think something like prewar Fallout, minus the bad stuff.

Politically I am an independent. I support what is good for the country, which means I cannot support either party.

We really learned nothing.

Now we ignore any atrocity to get “cheap” electronics. So it is not surprising we care so little about atrocities that happened 75 years ago.
We economically support today similar, albeit on a lesser scale the same type of stuff now.

That is correct. There is literal ethnic cleansing and genocide going on in East Turkestan, yet few seem to even care.

Just the shoes of the people who were killed.
Do you know the feeling? To see the emptiness of all those shoes, of all sorts and types, and to know that they were slaughtered, each a life that was cut short by the Nazis.

I think they can do this in more cities: piles of shoes, of people who were killed. People will not forget then.

Yad Vashem has something like that but it’s just children’s shoes. And there’s thousands of them. I threw up after seeing that.

There is one particular location in Yad Vashem that haunts me. Dark building with a ton of mirrors and candles, and voice reading the names of the children and the age they died. This sorta get's it across https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU-siyN ... 5%E5%BC%98

I do sincerely hope you are joking. Holocaust denial is not funny, at all.

What do you mean "holocaust denial"? This a truth vs falsehood thing. The holocaust tale has long been debunked and it only continues to be taught as history out of nostalgia from "the greatest generation". The whole tale has long been known to be nothing but American imperialist post-war propaganda to justify itself as the policeman of the world, amongst many other material benefits.

You can call it by the jewish label of "holocaust denial", but that's in equal standing with leprechaun and unicorn denial. Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny are all in reality parents impersonating those characters. You can verify this empirically.
